The first and the most important thing you can do is to read the student handbook from cover to cover. This handbook can be your best friend. This will aid you in how things are handled at your child's school. It will tell you not only what your child's responsibilities are it will tell you what the school expects from you as well. Make sure that you are not only familiar with the school's rules and regulations, but pay close attention to the grading scale, the attendance policy and how to contact your child's teachers. Whether it is to schedule a teachers' conference or just stop by and see how your child is behaving.
Make sure that you are aware of what is going on at your child's school. Read all of the materials they bring home and if you do not understand something or need more clarification on the issue make sure that you do not hesitate to contact the school. If the school has a website you should check it often. This is a great way to obtain information from your home. If the school provides a newsletter this is another way to stay informed with what is happening at your child's school. Even if you are unable to join your childs' school PTA, try to attend some of the meetings. This will also keep you well informed.
Another way you can expand your child's learning experience is too schedule teachers' conferences. This is a very effective way to find out how your child is progressing and also what you can do to help improve your child's learning experience. Meeting with your child's teacher as needed or at least twice in one grading period will show your child's teacher that you are concerned and want to be involved in your child's education. Make sure that you introduce yourself to the principal and the rest of the faculty and staff. You also want to make sure they have all of your contact information. It is important that they know how to contact you.
Another way you can expand your child's learning experience is to simply talk with your child about their day at school. You will be surprise what you can learn from your child by just letting them talk. This will also keep you abreast on what your child is learning in the classroom and also what subject(s) your child may need extra help in. Make sure that you allot this time to spend with your child. This should be a real conversation and not just a two minute inquiry. This can be done in the evening. Many families do this at mealtime, they simply talk about what everyone has done that day.
Remember your child's progress depends on you being involved with their education. This shows the child that you are not only interest in their studies, but also their total well being.
