Ways to Get Free Christmas Gifts for Kids

Lyn Vaccaro

You're not alone if you are anticipating a rough time financially this Christmas. If you've fallen on hard times that are preventing you from purchasing Christmas presents as you normally would, perhaps the following options might be something you could consider. Here's a few ways to get free Christmas gifts if you're in need this Christmas.

Community Organizations

In my own community I recently found out about a wonderful program being done by the local high school kids. Each homeroom is assigned to a family, one of them my own, that takes on the responsibility of purchasing the Christmas gifts for all of the kids. The high school kids get a bang from picking out gifts for all of the younger kids. To find a similar event, you can call the city hall in your community to see if any information is available regarding those types of holiday programs

Charitable Organizations

Organizations like the Moose Lodge, Roosters, or the Shriners and other similar types of societies also put together community based holiday giving programs for those families in need of Christmas gifts for the season. The Moose Lodges will hold events devoted to the families in need, providing them with not only gifts for the kids, but a luncheon event with games and a Santa appearance that's included with the gifts.

Local Churches

My own local church is a great source for my large family as well. They have secret Santa gifts as well as an Advent tree that has hanging envelopes with suggestions in them for Christmas presents for those church members and their families that are in need. They also have families that are assigned to purchasing gifts for other needy families in the church community. Sometimes, even if you yourself aren't a church member but have a friend that is, your friend can recommend you for help during the holiday season.

Veteran Holiday Events

Check with your local VFW post. The vets sponsor many events during the holiday season geared towards Christmas parties and gifts offered along with a visit from Santa. We have this sort of thing in one of the suburban Supper clubs in my community and it always leaves the kids with arms full of presents and smiles on their faces.
