Ways to Go Green with Your Cat

Are you looking for ways to go green with your pets? Yes, you can make some healthier changes in your cat's life that will also benefit the environment. For example, you can donate items your pet no longer uses and you can make your own cat litter. Find out how to make kitty litter below, as well as some other ideas cat owners can use to go green.

Donate Old Pet Toys

Cats like to play with new toys for a short while before they lose interest in them. Some cats lose interest in toys altogether once they grow older. Do you have old pet toys lying around the house unused? Gather them up, along with any other unused supplies, and make a trip to the local shelter. There are sure to be pets who will enjoy these new items.

Make Your Own Cat Toys

Rather than buying expensive, new toys that your cat is bound to outgrow, why not make your own with items you already own. Make a foraging toy using a clean, empty container, like this one . Because it dispenses food, it took a while for my cat to grow bored of it--plus, it was a way to get Loki to work for her food. Also, learn how to make your own cat toy from a paper tube.

Skip the Bottled Water

Some of us would rather not provide our pets with tap water. Rather than spending money on bottled water, refill your bottles and pet dishes with filtered tap water. We filter our own drinking water; if it's fine for us, it's fine for our pets--and much more eco-friendly than buying bottled water.

Make Your Own Kitty Litter

You have probably heard of using shredded newspaper to line the litter box. I tried it once, and it was really messy and smelled pretty bad. I recently came upon a way to make homemade kitty litter with newspaper that eliminates those problems. Learn more about how to make your own kitty litter. If you don't have the time for it, you can always try using pine pellets instead.

Don't Wear Shoes in the House

You're probably wondering what shoes have to do with your cat. Shoes track in all kinds of fungi and bacteria, which your cat will likely get on her paws. She will then go on to lick her paws clean, ingesting those yucky things. They can be especially harmful to strictly-indoors cats. Leave shoes in the entry to keep the floors clean and your pets healthy.

Very interesting! Can't say I've ever seen a green cat! P. T. Barnum, always looking for new things for his show, paid 400 dollars for a cherry colored cat. When it arrived from New Hampshire, he was disappointed to get a black cat. The note included said: "In our state, cherries are black."

My cat solves part of the problem for me. She refuses to use a litter box and insists on going out to the fenced back yard.

Excellent article and suggestions! Love the homemade cat toys, will probably try them out on our upstairs cat. The downstairs cat has to have dog-resistant toys else the dogs destroy her stuff.
