Almost everyone has been sad at one point of their life. Rather its loosing a pet, a friend, loosing a job, or even hearing of a tragic natural disaster. All of these can trigger some type of grief in us. For a while you may feel as if there will be no letting up and things will never be like it used to be. Fortunatly, many of us can rebound from such setbacks. But for some however, they seem to never manage how to dig themselves out of the hole.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression affects about 15 million people each year and that one in five of us will experience some form of depression sometime during our lifetime. When depression sets in sleep becomes impossible or on the other spectrum, all you want to do is sleep. People who suffer from major depression may find that the have significantly lower energy levels and find it hard from themselves to finish out things they started or visit friends and family. There is a gloomy and darkness that they feel. Sometimes it may be hard to explain how you feel but you know that you don't have the same "umph" as you used to.

Pessimistic thinking begins to kick in and a sense of worthlessness kicks into high gear. Remember simple things may become a challenge and for extreme and prolonged depression thoughts of suicide may begin to creep in. The person who gets occasionally depressed because of natural things in life and who rebounds quickly is not the person I'm talking about. Here I'm are talking about the person who suffers from a debilitating potentially life threatening condition. Self help remedies may be taken with caution, but immediate doctor evaluations should be taken no matter what.

No matter what the cause of your depression, you want the feeling to go away. Talking to someone about how you feel may actually help someone. Talking with a psychiatrist may benefit you or someone else who you know will be unbiased. If neccessary, a doctor may prescribe you antidepressants. With antidepressant, it is vital that you understand drug interactions with it and possible side effects. Mixing drugs with antidepressants can lead to depression worsening.
