Ways to Improve Your Community

Jordan Smith
Your community should be one of the best communities to live in because you are there volunteering and making sure it is thriving and a safe place to live. Maybe you want to get involve and you are not exactly sure what to do. Here are several ways you can help improve your community.

Donate your clothes
You can donate your clothes that you no longer use. Make sure that they are in good condition. There are various organizations that would take your donated clothes such as: a local homeless shelter, a church or a transitional home. You will be surprise how many people you can help with this small kind gesture. Just image the impact this would have on someone who has lost everything in a fire or someone who is re entering the workplace and do not have enough money to purchase a full wardrobe. Before donating your clothes make sure that they are clean and ready to be worn. In addition to your clothing you can also give your shoes that are in good condition. Accessories such as: scarves, jewelry, belts, handbags and men ties can be included. You can also purchase personal items to help out. If you have children you can give their clothes to the orphanage and even your local daycare centers in your area. Once again make sure the items donated are in good condition.

Support a cause in your community
You can become an advocate in your community. There are many negative factors that affect a community, crime, child abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, drugs, etc. Whatever it is that you want to focus on find a way to bring it to the fore front and speak out against it. With permission from your city town hall you can hold candle light vigils, town hall meetings, or marches to bring exposure to the issue and find a solution to aid the people in the community that are being plagued by that problem. Your local homeless shelter is a great place to start. You can meet with the administrative staff of the shelter. Let them know what you would like to do. You could then involve your neighbors and have fund raisers and different events that would help the shelter in providing blankets and other items for the homeless. Another excellent idea is to have meetings at the shelter that would inform the occupants how to find and maintain a steady place to live and gain their self sufficiency.

Making sure your voice is heard
Another way you can improve your community is by serving on the advisory board in your town or city. They normally have authority on most matters relating to your community. This will allow you to stay informed with what is going on in your community and at the same time you can give your opinions and input on various matters. This board is also involved with ways to improve your community. These boards usually meets once a month.

Using the media
The media is a very powerful weapon. Your local cable company may have a community access channel. This channel is normally opened to anyone who is willing to pay a small one-time fee for the class. This class normally consists of a orientation and you must be willing to learn how to operate the equipment. A few other requirements will be needed and you will be ready to start your own television show. If you have something you want others to know about this is an excellent way to get the message out. The channel is used from anything to preaching to locating missing people. This is another great way to reach and educate the community.

Volunteering
Volunteering with an organization can be a lot of fun. Not only is it fun but you are helping and making a difference in the process. Whether you are stuffing envelops, answering phone, stacking the food pantry, placing clothes on a clothing rack or delivering food to senior citizens your help is appreciated. These are several ways you can help improve and make a difference in your community.
