Ways to Improve Personal Finances by Cutting Small Corners

Kevin Smith
Over the past couple years the economy of the United States has had some major changes. Prices in general are rising and jobs are being cut. People are getting frustrated with trying to figure out a way to make it in this kind of economy, mostly because they don't know how. As with most things, the best way to be successful is to plan. People have to learn how to change their lifestyle. This is probably the hardest thing for people to do but it really isn't hard, and for most people it won't even change their lifestyles a whole lot.

The first thing that person could do to make sure that their situation doesn't get worse, is to analyze their lifestyle and figure out what things they can live without. This can be anything from buying alcohol or other similar activities to eating out. I'm sure that many of us spend a lot of money in these areas and don't even realize it. The more attention you pay to where your money is spent, the more unnecessary spending you will do. It may be hard to admit that things aren't as good as they were for you, but life is like that sometimes and it's okay. So make sure that you are always being honest with yourself .

Saving money for emergency situations is something a lot of people don't do but is still very important, especially living in this type of economy. Bill Heard Chevrolet just closed down 13 of his car dealerships without any type of warning to his employees or his customers. Things like that happen all the time, so it is best for us to have money set aside so that we don't go into debt while we're looking for another job. A good way to do this would be to set aside an amount that may be insignificant by itself, but will add up to a nice, saved, sum of money eventually. Ten percent of every paycheck would be a good place to start.

Something many of us may do regularly just so we can have money for things we may wants but do not need, is pay partial payments on our bills. If you have the money to pay your bills in full, pay them in full. I've seen many people get very behind on bills by only paying them in partials, just because they wanted to buy a new pair of shoes or something. Prioritizing is the key to keeping your head above water. If you can live without it, don't spend money on it. Make your bills your first priority always.

There are a number of other ways you can cut corners and somewhat downgrade your lifestyle if it is necessary. Just don't wait until you are drowning already before you take action.
