Ways to Keep Medium and Short Hair Out of Your Face

S. Whithers
Long hair is easy to keep out of the way: put it into a ponytail. People with hair too short for a ponytail have to struggle with other ways for keeping hair out of their faces. People with medium to short hair want to keep hair out of their way for working or exercising, but still want to look stylish. This is easier than it seems. Try these easy tips and tricks for keeping short hair out of your face while staying stylish.

Headbands, Headbands, Headbands.

Regular U-shaped headbands can serve to keep some of your hair out of your face, but the best headbands for exercising and working when you have short hair are elastic bands. They look something like a giant elastic tie, and they, being elastic, don't slide off your head as you move around and don't allow short layers of hair to escape.

To use, you should slip it over your head, around your neck, smooth all your hair straight back, and then pull it back up behind your ears and over your forehead. It should be near enough to your hairline that it catches even the shortest layer of your hair. If your headband is so near to your hairline that the longer layers are flipping over, or you simply want to spice your look up, pull on several more headbands and put them increasingly farther from your hairline.

Pins and Clips and Clamps

If you prefer an eclectic look, using colorful pins, clips, and mini-clamps might be your thing. It's fun to collect many different shapes, sizes, and colors of pins and clips. You can then simply pin any pieces of hair that are falling into your face. Pins and clips are best for bangs and other short layers immediately around your face. Clamps are helpful for pulling back long layers back behind your ears and up off your neck.

Ponytails Everywhere

If your hair is too short for a traditional ponytail, you can try pigtails, or multiple ponytails. A fun, punky look, multiple ponytails is a fun way to keep hair out of your face without look like a librarian. To do it: make a ponytail somewhere on your head. Form any hair that fell out of the first ponytail into a second one. Repeat until there's no hair left that's long enough to ponytail. You can clip, pin, or leave any hair that's left hanging out.

All of the Above

If you can't pick just one look, try using a combination of all the previously mentioned tips. Headband back your bangs, ponytail the bulk of your hair back, and pin, clip, and clamp all the stray hairs off your face and neck. Experimentation is the best way to find what works best for your hair and your style.
