Ways of Keeping Track of the Food You Eat

Most people who start a diet regimen understand the value in keeping track of the foods they eat. Not only does it help you calculate calories, fiber, and fat grams, it helps to keep you accountable for the choices you make. But how do you keep track of the food you eat in a convenient manner? There are two main options: a paper notebook, and computer software programs.

Keeping Track of the Food You Eat - Notebook or Paper

It is simple to keep track of the foods you eat in a basic notebook or an appointment book or calendar. Simply write in every food and beverage you eat during the day. While this will track the food you consume, it will not give you nutritional information.

If your interest is in counting calories, carbs, or fat for diet and weight loss purposes, you will have to use another book or resource to determine those numbers. Look up nutritional information in the book, online, or get it straight from the food label. If you organize your notebook with columns, you can keep a running total of calories throughout the day.

Keeping Track of the Food You Eat - Computer or PDA

Using a computer or PDA device to keep track of the food you eat can be easier. One option is to use a simple word processing or spreadsheet program to write down all the food you eat and the nutritional information. This is basically the same as using a paper notebook.

Another option is to use an online or desktop service designed to track food consumption. These programs, such as the free online version of Fitday.com, not only provide a location for you to enter food, they have a database of hundreds of different foods complete with nutritional information. When you enter the foods you eat, the calories, fat grams, sodium, and other aspects are instantly listed and added to your daily record.

These online food tracking programs have the added attraction of tracking exercise and calories burned as well. For a complete diet or weight loss tracking program, I recommend these online or desktop programs.

Keeping track of the food you eat not only keeps you on track in your diet plan, it can help you understand nutrient uses and healthy habits better. Whether you use a good, old-fashioned notebook or a fancy computer program, it is easy to keep track of the food you consume every day.
