Ways to Use Up Leftover Salsa

Brad Kamer
Salsa has become a top tier condiment in the household aside from catsup and pickles. Salsa is a common snack for friendly gatherings, watching your favorite sporting event on television or as an appetizer to kickoff a delicious Mexican meal. It may be served chilled or even warmed but it gets consumed in a hurry. The warehouse clubs even serve up the spicy topping in larger quantity containers which work well for large groups. At the end of the day when the snack table is cleaned up and the guests have gone home, you will most likely have a generous portion of unused salsa sitting in the refrigerator. The salsa most likely won't get consumed anytime soon since everyone in the home may probably be burned out on dip. The good news is there are creative ways to use up leftover salsa that will meet everyone's satisfaction at the dining table.

Topper

Salsa is a well known topper. It can be used on top of tacos and tortas in place of using taco sauce. The tomato and pepper flavors go well with the meat and corn tortilla flavors. Add a little cilantro and sour cream and the Mexican dinner is complete. It seems only fitting that the first idea for using leftover salsa should be as an accompaniment to Hispanic food. Salsa also goes good on old time favorites such as hamburgers. I enjoy a good south of the border burger by topping off the patty with Monterrey jack cheese, salsa, avocado, and a little jalapeƱo peppers. The burger goes down even better with a little leftover tortilla chips on the side.

If Mexican food is not on your dining agenda, consider pouring a little salsa on top of a baked potato. This is a great way to substitute other fats such as butter or sour cream. The salsa serves as an excellent flavor addition to what would be considered a bland potato.

The Ingredient

Salsa also can be a great ingredient for your weekly meals. If you plan on preparing a meat loaf or stuffed green pepper, why not add a little salsa in lieu of ketchup or tomato sauce? The salsa give the meatloaf a zesty finish and you may decide to also pour a little salsa on top of the meatloaf during the final stages of cooking to create a tangy glaze to the dazzling meal.

Green peppers stuffed with ground beef and Spanish rice also deserve the addition of a little leftover salsa and some cheddar cheese if available. The combinations of these flavors will make a stuffed green pepper more exciting to eat.

Wrap It up

Finally, salsa always makes a good ingredient with breakfast or lunch wraps. A breakfast wrap or burrito always starts with a warmed tortilla filled with scrambled eggs, cheese, and perhaps an additional protein such as bacon or beans. Before the wrap is sealed up, add a little of that leftover salsa for a great morning treat. Lunch wraps can be as delectable as the breakfast wraps. A good lunch wrap will consist of warmed tortilla filled with turkey or diced chicken, topped with cheese, lettuce, ranch dressing, and of course a little of that leftover salsa. This meal also goes well with some leftover tortilla chips if available.
