Ringworm is formally known as Tinea, which is a general term, referring to several different fungal infections of the skin, scalp or nails that can be contagious. Ringworm actually doesn't have anything to do with worms at all. Ringworm can affect anyone at anytime. The reason why it is called ringworm is because it leaves a ring like red rash on the skin or infected area.

Since ringworm is a fungal infection, it acts like a parasite and parasites feed on objects. If someone gets infected with ringworm this fungus can feed almost anywhere, such as the scalp, feet, nails, skin and groin areas. Ringworm is contagious. Firstly what are the causes of ringworm, what are the symptoms of this skin infection?

Ringworm germs can infect us when we have close contact with an infected person or even animals, also if we get in contact infected soil by walking around barefoot. This fungus also lives in public places, such as a gym and a shower. Also they can be found anywhere infected people have used these facilities. Also when sharing clothes, combs, brushes and other common items, we chance catching ringworm. Some of the symptoms of ringworm are redness of the skin; sometimes even may puss appear in the skin. Itchiness with irritation is also common symptom.

To get rid of ringworm one of the basics is just plain cleanliness. We must always be aware that the ringworm fungus likes warm, humid places. This germ thrives in these types of environment. People infected with ringworm should consult with a doctor and seek treatment as soon as possible; otherwise other members in the household can get infected too.

If infected with ringworm, you must not share any clothes and common items with anyone else. The sheets and other bedding, like blankets, pillows should be washed in warm water with an antibacterial and an anti fungal solution.

Personal hygiene such as washing your hands plays an important part in preventing ringworm. Remember also, to avoid direct contact with people since ringworm is a contagious disease. If someone chooses not to consult a physician, then perhaps your local pharmacy will have a remedy. Such remedies to ask for are anti fungal creams, tablets and any other medication that can rid the person of ringworm.

Normally with proper care and cleanliness and also the right medication the ringworm germs is killed. When animals have ringworm we must avoid direct contact with them too, until a veterinarian treats the animal. It is very important that parents and the general public educate themselves about the ringworm fungus and learn the importance of avoiding the spread of ringworm. It cannot only feel unpleasant, but if it grows on a spot that it noticeable, it can look unpleasant as well. Cleanliness is key factor in avoiding ringworm.
