If you are attempting to remodel your kitchen, for example, you are put under stress because you suddenly have no place to prepare food.
What are the ways, then, to reduce the stress of home improvement projects?
Set a Realistic Time Frame
One of the best ways to reduce the stress of home improvement projects is to be realistic about how long the job will take to complete.
A realistic time frame allows you to be emotionally prepared for whatever happens.
For example, if you want to rush through the home improvement project, any delay will only cause an increase in stress.
But, if you think the job will take a month and it only takes 3 weeks, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Family Vacation Time
Another way to reduce the stress of home improvement projects is to plan them along with annual family vacation times. This way you won't even be home when the dust is all over the floor.
Naturally, this idea requires prior planning. You can work out the basic ideas for the home improvement project in advance with the contractor, but this person might still need to contact you about small details.
While you are on vacation with your cell phone, you are still thinking about the home improvement project, but you are under less stress because you aren't being inconvenienced by it.
Invite Guests to the Project Site
Would you actually invite guests to witness the clutter of your home improvement project as a way of reducing stress?
The answer is yes.
Inviting guests can reduce the stress of your home improvement project in different ways. For one thing, these people don't expect your house to be completely organized at this time.
They can also bring food since they realize you are going through a transition in your home.
Finally, invited guests can cheer you up with their enthusiastic questions about what the remodeling job will eventually look like. Their enthusiasm will remind you of why you started the home improvement project to begin with and will therefore reduce stress.
In sum, home improvement projects can cause stress because they disrupt the daily routine of life.
You can reduce stress, however, by being realistic about how long the job will take to complete, by going on vacation, and by sharing the project with enthusiastic visitors.
