The cold and flu viruses are viruses that invade the upper respiratory tract. The common cold is caused by over 200 viruses while the flu is caused by influenza A, B, or C. Fever, coughing, congestion and body aches are often associated with a cold and flu. There are no known cures for the cold or flu, but there are treatments to help alleviate the symptoms so that you can feel better.

Rest

Catching a cold or the flu virus can wreck havoc on the body. Rest is important during this time so that the body can fight off the invading virus. When the body doesn't get the proper rest, the immune system wears down making it hard to fight against the cold or flu. Rest as often as you can and do not overexert yourself when trying to fight off a cold or flu virus.

Hot liquids

Drink plenty of hot tea and sip on broths when fighting a cold or flu. Hot liquids help relieve aches and pains throughout the body. Drinking hot liquids can also help break up congestion in the chest and sinus cavities as well as relieve inflamed membranes in the nose and throat. Liquids also help keep the body hydrated and keeps the body from becoming dehydrated during your battle with a cold or flu.

Medications

Medications that contain ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and aspirin can be taken as directed. These medications often help relieve pain associated with body aches and reduces fever. It is important to know that children should never be given aspirin with flu-like symptoms. Aspirin can cause a child to develop a condition called Reye's syndrome. Reye's syndrome is a life-threatening condition that affects the nervous system and liver. If you have a child that catches the flu, call your pediatrician to find out what medications should be used to help relieve aches and fevers.

Humidifier

Use a humidifier during the cold or flu. Humidifiers add moisture to the air which breaks up congestion by moisturizing dry, swollen mucus membranes. For added comfort and relief, add a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil to the water in the humidifier. Eucalyptus will help open up nasal passages and soothe aches and pains
