Ways to Remove Hard Water Stains from Glass Shower Doors

If your glass shower doors are cloudy, most likely you have hard water stains. Although they are not particularly difficult to remove, you can cut the scrubbing time in half by applying a cleaner to help dissolve the stains. There are many types of cleaners that you can use to protect against hard water stains: pick the one that is most convenient for you.

Baking Soda and White Vinegar

Create a paste using baking soda and white vinegar. Apply with an abrasive scrubbing pad in a circular motion. If the paste starts to dry out, use more white vinegar. Keep scrubbing until the hard water stains have been removed. Rinse the glass shower doors with warm water.

If you do use this method, you may want to soak the shower head in white vinegar while you work. Simply unscrew the shower head and let it soak in a cup of white vinegar. Overnight is best for heavy staining. After you have finished soaking, rinse the shower head and twist it back into place. This should prevent the ends of the shower head from getting clogged and lessening the spray.

Hard Water Stain Remover

You can buy a hard water stain remover that is suitable for use on glass, such as Spot X or Amaz. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for use: in most cases you will spray on the cleaning solution, wait five minutes for it to penetrate the hard water stains, then lightly scrub until they are completely removed.

Laundry Stain Remover or Fabric Softener Sheets

If you have extra laundry stain remover, you can also use it to remove hard water stains. Simply spray the stain remover onto the glass and scrub away the haze. You can also moisten a fabric softener sheet and use that to scrub away stains. Rinse the doors once you are finished, no matter which method you try.

Oven Cleaner

Oven cleaner is a toxic cleaner that should be handled carefully. However, if you work in a well ventilated area, wearing gloves and eye protection, you can use it to clean even the toughest hard water stains on your shower doors. Be sure to rinse thoroughly after you are done: oven cleaner will burn exposed skin.
