Ways to Save Money on Family Entertainment

L. Brown
It's hard for families to save money. Children often want to stop at the local fast food place, or go to the movies, or go play at the children's museum, but it's hard to budget for those things. Here are some tips you can use to help you save money, and still entertain the kids.

First, check into season or yearly passes. Usually for less than $200 (and often for less than $150), an entire family can get a pass to the local zoo, children's museum, play center, or the like. A local zoo charges only $89 for a yearly pass for an entire household, but $9 for each child and $13.50 for each adult. Say that a family of two adults and two kids decide to visit the zoo. Their pass pays for itself after only 2 visits. And it's good for an entire year! But where it really starts saving a family money is if they have more than 2 kids. See, this particular zoo allows up to 6 children and 2 adults in the same household to visit. That means that one visit to the zoo could cost $81, or only $8 away from a pass that will let them visit for a whole year. You will find yourself going more often, although probably for shorter amounts of time. This has its own benefits. Instead of going and feeling guilty for staying well past the point where everyone is tired and ready to leave, you can spend a short amount of time and come back later.

Second, check into cheap events around town. The local movie theater runs a special during the winter where they show a children's movie and give you a popcorn for only $2 on Saturday and Sunday. The movies aren't that enjoyable for parents, but the kids will enjoy them. And the price can't be beat. Other businesses may offer special deals on certain days of the week. A pottery painting place offers special pajama deals where they give you a special rate on Friday nights if you dress in pajamas and stay late.

Third, check restaurants for days when kids eat free. You can save a lot of money by visiting your favorite restaurants on a Tuesday rather than a Wednesday. Other than that, go to the bookstore and get a kid's cookbook, and start making some of the recipes with the whole family. There's no need to eat out if you can create their favorites at home. This idea also works for finding some of the restaurant secret recipes that exist on the internet. For example, why eat at McDonald's when you can add Thousand Island dressing and make your own Big Macs?

Finally, consider at-home entertainment. Invest in a lot of board games and movies. Instead of spending $10 per person at the theater, you can buy a DVD and watch it over and over. You might ask what if the movie is lousy, but you run the risk of that happening at the theater too, and it's a more costly mistake. Also, check movie stores for used video games for whatever console you have in your home. It's a great way to pick up some bargains that they are trying to get rid of.

Using these steps, you can keep your kids from ever saying that they are bored, and save your budget in the process. Spend the money wisely, and you can save up enough for a bigger vacation, or the kind of event that isn't as easy to save money on.
