Ways to Save Money on School Holiday Parties

Shellie
Since I have an eleven year old daughter, I should know all about these school parties and how they really work. Everyone signs up on a sheet for what they want to bring, then as per usual the kids forget to give it to the parents until the night before. So, that leaves us scrambling around trying to either find what's on the list, or coming up with something else. F.Y.I., when I was in a pinch I would make something not on the list and just say it was healthier.

If you were one of the lucky ones to volunteer to bring in snacks/food always check around for bulk sales. But, remember just because its in bulk doesn't make it a sale, do the math.

As far as for a Christmas holiday party make the decorations instead of buying them. Don't forget about the stockings, have the children make them. Start by making cones out of some different colored construction paper. Then cut a 2" wide strip of construction paper that is long enough to fit around the top (opening) of cone. Then you will need to cut something like belt loops to thread some decorative ribbon through. The ribbon should be long enough to go all the way around the opening and have enough left to use to hang it. Now that your stocking is done, have the kids fill it with candy.

Next you the children should make their own Christmas cards for each other. Have them cut out shapes such as stars, Christmas trees, plenty of circles (you can use for a snowman card). Let them run wild with their imagination.

How about some needle and thread to string up some cranberries and popcorn. Have each kid in charge of something as well as making their own tree ornaments.

Let's not forget about games and festivities. Have the kids put on their own classroom play. Something that doesn't cost anything except their imagination. As in one of my other articles, I think it's the thought that counts and more credit should be given to children than is.

Another good and creative way to decorate the classroom, is to make a Christmas town. Collect card board, you can generally get this for free. The town can be in 3-D or just look like it is. The children can cut the cardboard into different shapes such as a church, bakery, school, toy shop, etc. then paint them. Add some snow and snow flakes. Don't forget Santa's house. You could make his gate out of candy canes.

Here is a really good idea, have the kids grow a snowflake in a jar. That's really just one idea, how about gift giving amongst the kids...that always goes over well.

Remember after the party is just as important. Recycle everything you possible can for next year or make it a school recycling and take all party supplies (plastics, paper, etc.) to the recycling company to recover some of the cost.
