Ways to Shore Up Your Portfolio During a Recession

Finding Good Buying Opportunities During a Recession

Drew Nelson
The economy can be hard on your portfolio. Recessions have happened before and they will happen again. Now that we are starting to bounce back from a recession, you may want to consider ways to shore up your portfolio. If you think the economy has hit bottom this may be a good time to buy stock before the prices rebound. Here are some anti-recession tips you might want to consider:

Aim for quality.

If there is one thing that the market does not like it is uncertainty. This is especially true for companies that produce predictable figures. When a company misses expectations the market reacts negatively. Investors stay away from companies that don't perform as expected. But during a recession good companies sometimes perform poorly because of the overall economy. The investor needs to look at a larger time period to see how the company has performed in the long term. If a company is the victim of the overall economy rather than poor performance a good buying opportunity may exist because the stock is likely to rebound once the economy recovers.

Invest in companies that more or less show predictable growth because this points to better earning quality. These are usually large firms, big players in an industry that have prov-en staying power regardless of the economy and have plenty of money to continue their operations. These type opportunities are easy to find because analysts will report on them as well as companies not doing well which you should avoid.

Invest in health care.

Weather you invest in pharmaceuticals or health services this sector continues to enjoy a healthy performance regardless of economic conditioned and your portfolio will be stronger as a result.

Invest in companies that provide basic consumer needs

Consumers are the lifeblood of economies. Put your money on industries that cater to the most basic of consumer needs, such as food and beverages, personal care and household needs. Other than the fact that consumers have been prov-en to continue spending for basics even during a bad economy, these industries have also performed well during less-than-ideal economic times in the past. You're less likely to experience disappointment if you go where consumers go. Companies like Wall-mart and Meijer's are good examples.

Diversify.

A recession can create opportunities because companies that continue to do well will stand out. If you want to shore up your portfolio and avoid the negative effects of a recession, consider diversifying. But focus on companies and industries that have done well under pressure, particularly those that continue to stay steady even during a recession.

If you follow the market closely and patiently you can find good investment opportunities even during a recession.
