Ways to Make Sure Your Child Gets Socialization when Homeschooling

Alicia Bodine

I am writing this article some what out of frustration. Homeschooling parents do take a lot of snide remarks from parents who don't homeschool. One of the biggest remarks I hear is that I am depriving my daughter of socialization. When I list all of the things my daughter is involved in they having nothing to say. I actually think my daughter gets too much socialization if that is possible.

The first thing a parent should do is sign their child up for some kind of physical activity. My daughter is involved in soccer and softball at the local rec center. She makes plenty of friends. Children that are involved in these types of activities seem to be better behaved and less likely to get in to trouble. I haven't had any problems with the children my daughter plays sports with. These sports keep her busy 3-4 days per week.

My daughter is also involved in horse back riding which is a lone sport, but it lends itself to a horse camp this summer where she had the time of her life and make 4 really good new friends. So don't rule out these types of activities.

The second thing a parent should do is participate in church activities. My daughter sees her friends from church Sunday's and Wednesday's. We have a family night on Wednesday nights and the kids all practice for a musical that they perform at Christmas time. The second half of the year produces another musical that is preformed in June. The kids, especially my daughter, enjoy performing these musicals. There were over 400 people who attended the last musical and it was equipped with special effects. My daughter even had to wear a microphone.

If your church doesn't offer these activities you can find one that does. There are also Vacation Bible Schools in the summer where children get together every day for a week. My daughter participated in that and also in the Vacation Bible Schools we have in the winter and spring.

Third, you can sign your child up for any type of camp in the summer. Besides Vacation Bible School and Horse Camp my daughter participated in a week of art camp and a week of going to the Wetlands Institute. There are plenty of camps that your child can take part in. All of the ones my daughter attended were day camps, but there are sleep over camps as well. Camp is a great way for your child to make a friend who has some common interests.

Fourth, whenever you are planning something fun such as going to the beach or talking a walk on the boardwalk you should invite a friend of your child's to come along. They will cherish the memories they got to have with their friend and you are right there supervising that everything is going well.

Finally, there really are so many things you can do to make sure your child is getting a good amount of socialization. There are homeschool groups you can join, play dates you can make at the park, Birthday parties, and more. Just evaluate the opportunities around you and take advantage of them.
