Ways to Transform Your Bedroom on a Budget

Are you looking for a quiet sanctuary where you can can escape or a sexy boudoir? You can transform your bedroom into either without spending a lot of money. When I moved into my home, I planned the color scheme and style of the bedroom before I went shopping. I cut out images from magazines and glued them onto a piece of construction paper, creating a cohesive look for the room. Having a visual reference helped me adhere to my vision for the bedroom and not buy accessories on impulse.

Save on curtains - I saved money on curtains by using the ones I already had until I found some in my price range and color scheme. When my sister told me she spent close to $500 on custom curtains for two rooms, I hesitated before curtain shopping. I found my curtains by shopping the clearance racks at discount stores. I dug through bins until I unearthed long chocolate brown curtains with diagonal designs and large brass eyelets. They looked perfect. At $10 each, I bought five.

* When curtains hang too low you can bunch them near the bottom, as if you're making a ponytail in your hair. Tie a ribbon around the bunched area to lift the curtains off the floor or away from baseboard heaters. I used a light gray ribbon that I bought for a dollar.

Rejuvenate with paint - Change the mood and look of your bedroom with a paint. Move all of the furniture out of the room if you can. I have painted rooms without lugging furniture from room to room by sliding all of the big pieces into the center of the room. Cover the furniture with large tarps or old sheets.

Paint the ceilings first in a crisp white or use a warmer white hue. I painted every ceiling in my house with a semi-gloss white paint after priming it. I renewed my 1940s yellowed ceiling tiles to a more modern and clean white. I edged out the ceiling first with a brush then applied paint on a roller with an extra long handle. The painting tools cost less than $10.

* When painting more than the bedroom ceiling, consider the savings when you buy a 25-gallon container or primer for all of your ceilings.

Cover up an old comforter - A duvet cover solves the comforter dilemma. I loved my cozy comforter and did not want to replace it. The comforter did need an update because of small areas of frayed threads. It started to look a little too shabby (and not so chic) for my bedroom.

I found a duvet cover that matched my chocolate brown and tranquil blue color scheme. I paid less than $30 for the cover. It would have cost at least double that for a new Queen size comforter.

Decorate with less - Carefully choose which wall decorations and tabletop accessories you include in your new bedroom. If you don't love it, leave it out.

Great ideas! There's no way I'd pay $500 for curtains for two rooms.
