There are 3 ways to get here. One is by flying from the lower 48 or Canada. Plane tickets range anywhere from $300.00 to $1500.00 round trip, depending on where you are flying from and how far in advance you buy your tickets. This is of course one of the easier ways to get here, as Alaska is so far away from everything else. When purchasing your tickets, try to buy them at least 3 or 4 months in advance. And if you can come during the winter, as plane tickets can be up to 50% cheaper during the winter. Summer is our busy month with lots of tourists, so airlines raise their prices during the months of March through September.
The second way to get here is by cruise ship. There are numerous cruises that come up here that leave from Washington state, Oregon and even California. These can be great fun, as you get to come up here slowly with lots of stuff to do on the way. The cruise ships although sail by loads of glaciers, and you can see whales and seals on the way up here. Alaskan cruises are by far one of the better ways to see Alaska, if you like a planned itinerary.
The last way to get here takes the longest. That is of course, coming by car. The trip to Alaska by car can take anywhere from 1 - 12 days depending on where you are coming from and how often you actually plan to sleep. When traveling to Alaska by car, you do have to come up the AlCan through Canada. There is no direct route from the lower 48 to Alaska. When coming through Canada you will need the following: Passport, license, regitration, insurance and $500 in cash or on credit cards. Canada requires the money in order to enter Canada. No I'm not sure why, it is just a requirement to drive through Canada. This is however a gorgeous drive. You will drive through Yukon, and Denali national Park. This is by far one of the more scenic and lazy ways to get here.
However you decide to come though, bring lots of money and cameras or camcorders. You will want them to capture all the highlights of your trip.
