You can give something you have made away. Give it to someone you know will use it. And chances are someone will ask where they can get one. Thats when you say "I can make you one for $$$" And usually they will order one. Then you can start with local flea markets and craft fairs. You may have to pay a small fee for the table or booth but just getting your craft shown is the first step.
With the Internet you can set up a free web site to sell your Items. Just make sure you charge a shipping fee for items you have to ship. There are sites that will help you sell your items but you have a posting fee and if you aren't careful you will have more to post then what you will sell and be left in the hole so to speak. The cheaper alternative is to set up your own site. There are some domain companies that offers free web sites and even give you the templates to get you started. You can drive people to you site by running ads on the search sites. And word of mouth use public chat areas to advertise your site as well as blogs.
You can also set up sites that you pay a small monthly fee and they advertise for you.
If you do set up a web site you always come out better by selling a mix of different crafts. Make it a joint site by finding someone to help you supply your art the more variety you offer the more repeat customers you will have.
It mostly depends on the amount of time you want to put into your hobby whether or not you make a go of it. On average it can take about 20 hours a week if you really are looking to have a steady income. There are many people who look to buy hand crafted items.
Items that are made to decorate the home is a big seller. Hand crafted Americana themes are also a big seller around the forth of July. Christmas and other holiday items sell real well. I have found that if your items are centered around the trends of the time you can make a sizable income.
What ever you choose to do or how you choose to market your hobby you can have a fun and rewarding time.
