Ways to Upcycle Old Movie Products: How to Make a DVD Wind Chime

Rosallee Scott
Ever notice how a DVD reflects a rainbow when it catches the light? Are some of your favorite albums and films scratched or worn out? Why throw away damaged ones when you can upcycle old movie products and make an industrial looking wind chime out of them? All you need is some metal wire, a puncher or a drill and a little bit of time to create a one-of-a-kind ode to your favorite music and movies that you put in the player one to many times. Gather your old classics together, such as all of the "Walt Disney" flicks that your kids have ruined, and put together a themed window decoration for your home.

Materials Needed:
Old DVDs
Metal Wire
Snips
Metal Puncher or Drill

Step 1: Punch small holes in the top of the discs. Use a heavy duty puncher, found in craft stores, or a drill with a small bit.

Step 2: String metal wire, used for making jewelry through the holes. Work with different lengths to achieve the look that you want when making a DVD wind chime.

Step 3: Connect the discs so that they are facing different ways. Alternate the fronts and backs to show the titles in some and the shiny silver backs in others.

Step 4: Twist the wire in some places to allow the discs to spin around when put in the wind. This will allow for more of a rainbow effect than if they were secured from moving.

Step 5: Use your favorite out of the series as the top of the structure. Drill or punch small holes around the edges to hold all of your metal strings, with the title facing down for everyone to see.

Make a few of these DVD wind chimes to showcase all of the films that you love. Hang them from your porch railings or in front of your windows and enjoy the rainbows that they reflect.
