Ways to Wind Down for a Good Nights Sleep

Antoinette McGowan
Winding down at night is sometimes a very hard thing for people to do. You know you need to sleep but your mind and/or body just won't let you. The next day you are wore out and not running mentally at full capacity. I have had problems with this for a long time. Here are some of the things that I have learned to do that help me to wind down at night and get a full night of sleep.

Abstain from caffeine-

I abstain from anything that contains caffeine about two hours before I plan to go to sleep. Tea, coffee and sodas contain caffeine which gives your body a rush. By abstaining from anything that contains caffeine you will be better able to wind down for bed.

Warm milk-

Yes it really does work. I can not stand warm milk but on a really bad night I have found myself sipping on a cup of the nasty stuff. You really don't have to like the stuff to use it for a good night of sleep. Just choke it down, like I do.

Read a book-

Reading seems to make me sleepy. The only problem that I have is if the book is really good, then I have problems putting it down until the end. So what I do is read something that is not all that good but allows for me to become sleepy from reading.

Refrain from anything physical-

I try to make sure that I don't do anything really physical around an hour or so before bedtime. I have found that if I do anything really physical then I seem to be more wired than I was prior to the physical activity and can not sleep. Things such as vacuuming , mopping or dusting seem to hype me up, so I leave these activities until morning when I need the boost.

Counting-

Yes I really do count sheep or what ever else I can conjure up in my mind to count. I do this when I have trouble shutting my mind down. At night in bed I have a bad problem of going over the bills, what I need to write the next day and so on and so forth. So to keep my mind off of these things, I just start counting until I fall asleep.

If you have trouble falling asleep and none of the above suggestions seem to work for you , I would recommend then talking with your doctor. Your doctor may be able to offer you something to allow for you to get a good nights sleep.

I drink caffeine all night long. No wonder I sleep all day. ;) But I'm a night owl. Personally when I'm trying to go to sleep, I love just fantasizing about my stories or thinking up ideas for new stories. Most times I'm happy that I can't fall right to sleep... until the next morning if I have to be up early.

Good advice, since I got a computer in my bedroom, staying on the internet too long makes it hard to for me to get to sleep afterwards

I would have to be in bad shape to resort to warm milk.

Great ideas. I often have times falling asleep. I love reading books and they do make me tired as well. I also try not to drink any caffeine after 6 p.m. Excellent article.
