This year was no different. The first thing they wanted to do was to get real New York pizza. So we did and it was great.
When the relatives asked if we were satisfied , we agreed that we were.
Then the kids started talking about Dad's great new grilled pizza.
One night this summer it was very hot out and we didn't want to heat up the kitchen , so we decided it was a grill night. Everyone was tired of the same chicken, hamburg and hot dog thing, so my husband suggested making pizza on the grill. We got the dough and supplies together and to our surprise it turned out to be the best pizza we ever had!
Our native New York relatives weren't so sure about it, So they challenged my husband to make it for them. We went to the local store and got some great fresh veggies, mozzarella and sauce. Then stopped by the pizza shop and picked up some fresh dough.
My husband stretched the dough to fit the grill, brushed olive oil on the bottom side and plopped it on the grill. Meanwhile we chopped up the toppings. When the dough was cooked on the bottom, he removed it from the grill. He then brushed the uncooked side with olive oil and flipped it over. We topped the grilled side with fresh tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella and put it back on the grill until the cheese was melted and the bottom was cooked (It only takes a few minutes).
When he took the pizza off the grill they couldn't believe how great it looked. He cut it up and everyone dug in while he started making the next one. Sure enough, they had been converted this was now their new favorite pizza!
In a matter of minutes they all had ideas for toppings. One suggested barbecue sauce, grilled chicken and cheese. Another wanted to try topping it with bruschetta. Then an Aunt came up with fresh rosemary, sea salt and grated cheese , it was delicious.
Before long they were suggested that he retire and open a grilled pizza shop. He'd love to and some day who knows.
If you're looking for a healthy alternative to takeout, try grilled pizza it's amazing! It's fun, it's interactive and everyone will have their own idea of what they like. Now when we have company we get some dough, a whole pile of toppings and some cold drinks and it's great fun.
