Yesterday statements endorsing President Barack Obama's plan to bring home about two-thirds of our military who are in Iraq by August 2010 were issued.
This was seen as somewhat of a compromise for President Obama. During his campaign his promise was to bring home every one fighting in Iraq within 16 months of his taking office. The plan now is to bring home about 100,000 troops and keep up to 50,000 troops in Iraq to train the Iraqis and to keep a presence there.
Of course you cannot please everyone. Some (Democrats) didn't like the 50,000 number thinking it was too high. The Republicans needed to be reassured that in the case of security problems in Iraq the plan would be set aside. Is the timeline dangerous and arbitrary? What are your thoughts?
Anyone who has been reading my pieces knows I am an Obama supporter and have been for a very long time. This is little to no chance that anything he thinks is right I would think is wrong. This is another example of Obama's ability to compromise and think with a clear head. Somehow our brilliant and charismatic leader was able to bridge the difference between those in Congress.
Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, thought that this was good news because it actually does show us that the war may truly be coming to an end. We have waiting so long for this bogus war to be over and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Even Senator John McCain can live with this plan. Things in Iraq we know are better; having Obama as President I believe as a supporter gives us comfort and we don't have to scream at W to get out of Iraq. Republicans - even the military commanders- have endorsed this timetable.
It is thought that all United States forces will be out of Iraq by the end of 2011.
"After all the tragic losses of life, after the hundreds of billions of dollars spent, after all the other costs our country has absorbed as a result of the conduct of this war, we are finally on a path to success," McCain said. AP
