We Live

A Powers
The boughs weep
green-white blossoms
into the water.
I watch them circle
among quiet ripples
and wander downstream.
The light dapples through
to guide them.
A grackle watches,
cocks his eye
toward the stony impasse ahead.
I want to reach out
to save the tiny ships
before the tumble of rocks and twigs
breaks them up,
marooning some,
into pistles and stamens
and mushy green-white tongues.
They tip over the falls,
crying out while they can,
"We live! We live!"
