We Needed to Build a Fire to Keep Warm

Tara M. Clapper
We needed to build a fire to keep warm.
I wanted us to be someone.
The muse will come and the church burn down.
But grandmother cares for the wise
She was once beautiful
Just like the baby that lies
In her arms.
The fire ashes will shake us away
To where our spirit souls lie
Across the sea.
The water washes your age away
As the bards seek you out
In my eyes.
I've weathered journeys across the sea
Wondering what you feel about me
Fires crash and oceans tide
In your eyes.
Just remember what you needed from me.
We needed to build a fire to keep warm
In your eyes.
