We Are Not Equal: A Letter
It is Unconstitutional for the Majority of the Population to Take Rights Away from the Minority
As of November 6, 2009, it is legal to fire a human being in 29 states within the United States of America because he/she is gay, lesbian or bisexual. That is disgusting. Simply put, we are not a model for the rest of the world. The insulting fact is that it is legal to discriminate in America based on factors that are not negotiable. Being a lesbian, gay or bisexual human being is not a choice or something that can be changed. This has been proven in many court cases.
The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) would make it illegal to fire someone based on a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.
I want to know something; why is my livelihood dependent on popular vote in 29 states? Why are my LGBT brothers and sisters not protected against discrimination in the workplace in 2009? When will this madness end? How many more Matthew Shepards need to happen before we are protected under the Federal law? States should not have the right to decide whether or not I am equal based on my sexual orientation. I have an idea - let's decide if all of the straight people in the world are allowed to get divorced. That'll go over well.
I ask that you submit and re-publish this article in your city's newspaper and let it be known that the majority population should not have the power to keep down the minority population. It is unconstitutional - or at least it's supposed to be.
Sincerely,
Sarah Toce

Post a CommentVery well put...
As someone who grew up in Europe I was shocked to see how rampant homophobia is in the States. This country has a long way to go when it comes to acceptance.
