We Need Our Bugs!

Bugs They Work Really Hard. They Deserve Some Respect

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

Crawling critters
Give folks the jitters
As they scurry across
Surfaces that someone
Had just disinfected.
For a moment
We are shaken and suspect
That the cleaning
Was not adequately
Inspected.

While we are in the mode of rejecting
It is hard to be accepting
That, like us,
They are indigenous
Earth life forms, too,
And are not dangerous
Micro-organisms
(Though they may carry some of those
That we can't even see:
But, then again,
So do we)
But animals
With odd appearing faces
With whom we share
This blue-green orb's
Available spaces.
Insects, bugs and
Creeping life
Built inside out
With exoskeletons
That hold them all in
In a way that serves
A similar function
To our skin
Without internal
Supportive beams
Like bones
Connected in structurally
Coordinated
Teams.

Without them
The world would bury
Itself
Under mounds of
Deceased flora and fauna
And in short order,
The piled up waste
Would render our human
Species
A categorically extinct
Goner.
We may find them hard to look at
And to see the value in what they bring,
But without those creepy, crawling
Critters
Our world would become
A non-composting
Foul-smelling
Thing.

If we think it's bad
The way it already has become,
A decade or two without the bugs
Would leave that thought
Premature,
Incomplete
And arguably
Somewhat dumb.

I like Han's comment... and I'm not so sure David ISN'T talking about those pesky YCN bugs... it certainly fits!

This is cute and true. I forget that they have a purpose all the time.

The only bugs I kill are the mosquitoes! They're useless!

    Fantastic!

By your title I thought I was going to be reading about Y!CN issues.

Truer words were never spoken. Sometimes I wonder about the worth of some insects like the mosquito.
