We Can Stop Our Dependence on Foreign Oil and Fossil Fuels

The answer to our dependence on oil and the rising cost at the gas pumps is in hydrogen fuel cell cars. If fossil fuels and oil were not in such demand the cost of a barrel of oil would go back down to acceptable levels. Pollution would come under control because fossil fuels would not be utilized for our automobiles.

As usual California leads the nation in new and innovative technology.

If the investments in hydrogen fueling stations begin to match those in fossil fueling stations the development of hydrogen fuel cars would explode. The problem right now is we don't have available hydrogen fueling stations even if we had the cars. Hydrogen can be produce in huge amounts by using electricity and water and the solar energy can provide the electricity. The advantages besides being efficient are that when hydrogen burns it produces no trace in the air except for a little water vapor.

What is the problem with hydrogen fuel cell cars? The problem is there are no consumer distribution systems in place. There are gas stations all over the place and propane gas is readily available. The money just needs to be directed into the proper channels. If there is money to be made from producing widely available hydrogen stations then they will be developed. California has a strong program of government subsidies and regulations and yet the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are not expanding as fast as they should.

If we develop gas stations that require nothing but solar electricity and water to convert to hydrogen and we can then refill those storage tanks without fuel deliveries we will have arrived. We will no longer be dependent on foreign countries to provide us with oil and our air will be much cleaner.

The drawbacks that some people cite are the fact that hydrogen under pressure is explosive. This perception is incorrect because hydrogen is not as dangerous as most people believe. Tests have been performed on hydrogen fuel cell cars dropped from as high as 90 feet and the hydrogen tanks did not explode. The manufacturers can design tanks that are very safe and as safe as current gasoline tanks. The fire and flame from hydrogen doesn't put out much heat and hydrogen is less likely to ignite than gasoline. Gasoline tanks exploded in test cars consumed the whole car. This was not the case in hydrogen tanks that were exploded. The whole back of the car burned in gasoline fires and the back windows melt. The back windows in a hydrogen fire were most typically not be damaged.

The public perception of hydrogen and images like the Hindenburg and the hydrogen bomb is probably the biggest obstacle to fuel cell cars as well as the perceived cost of building an infrastructure to support these vehicles nationwide.

The Hydrogen fuel cell car will be the answer to pollution and freedom from OPEC oil and Congress needs to get behind it.
