We Were More:

Plus an Infinity of Love

Gloria Campos
There was more to us

than rags,

more than poor,

more than struggle,

day in

day out-

for money,

success,

a better life than this.

More to us than humdrum and distress,

to our polite friends

to our "non-judgmental" family.

More than deadbeat jobs

and a crap load of bad luck

in random and unreliable circumstances.

We spoke of politics.

Rather we argued politics

before,

after,

even during

sex

in the shower

on the sofa,

on rainy days

in the middle of the night

upside down...

We loved making

your homemade pizza

playing board games

midnight snacking

chips, avocado salsa

unashamed to be coach potatoes

during Lost or 24.

We loved our girls

their smiles

their mischievous eyelashes

their mysterious ways

of making us better more humble people.

We loved the botanical gardens

in the spring,

leisurely walking

through the flowers you knew I loved,

then back to the bridge where we first kissed

underneath the sunlight peeking in between

the tall whispering trees.

We were more than the bad fights,

on long hopeless days and far away dreams

surviving never ending

bleak times.

We kept going,

even when we were pushed back,

thrown down,

when the ground vanished

from underneath our feet.

We cried. We screamed. We became

disillusioned with life...

But only for a moment.

Only a small moment before

We found more ground,

Our Ground

then stood

back Up,

Strong,

Firm,

Determined,

Together

to start over,

to continue,

to go forward,

another struggle ....another crisis

and an Infinity of Love.
