We Are the World Remake Benefits Haiti Victims

The remake of the 1985 We are the World debuted at the opening ceremonies in Vancouver, British Columbia, Friday February 13, 2010. The much anticipated project took on a slightly different twist then the original version with the addition of a rap section in the latter half of the single. As told to MTV, Lionel Richie, executive producer, "wanted to approach the project from a modern perspective." New and popular artists were featured as well as seasoned veterans like Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand, who helped to lay down the tracks to the new version of We are the World. Over 80 artists gathered at the same studios that the original version of We are the World had been produced 25 years earlier.

As quoted on the We are the World website, Quincy Jones stated, "25 years ago, the entertainment industry showed the power of community to help our fellow man when we recorded We Are The World to bring relief to those suffering from famine in Ethiopia. And while the need to assistant Africa continues, today the country of Haiti is suffering immeasurably from the destruction due to the recent earthquake and is in immediate need of relief that will last long after the television cameras have left. As artists, we have joined together on this 25th anniversary and in the spirit of We Are The World to help meet that need."
