Wearing the Golden Age of Eyewear: Review of Retrospecs & Co. Eyewear

Sea Shepherd
RetroSpecs & Company collected authentic and unique early American spectacles that were manufactured during the 1920s, 30s and 40s. These spectacles were stored over the years and kept in mint condition. However, they now can be bought from RetroSpec. They are wire rimmed glasses which were produced from 1/10 12k gold filled wire including 10k bridges and made with a material of unparalleled quality in the history of eyewear manufacturing. They have an old charm of intricate filigree carved into the wires that were designed by craftsmen in the early days of glass wear. Now, to enhance the vintage quality, they shape each piece with a modern RetroSpec & Company design. However, best of all is how light weight they are to wear.

For about 10 years I have been wearing glasses on a daily basis. As a result of my sensitive skin, finding true comfort around the nose bridge area in glasses was always a big problem for me. Every time I would have glasses on all day, I would always have an indentation around my nose area. The more I wore them, the more I continually irritated the problem to the level I would have to take my glasses off for a relief period. However, that became a problem when it kept me from doing work because I needed glasses to see. So, in 2005 and 2006 I tried wearing contacts to alleviate the pain and give the area a rest so that I would not have that indentation any more. It did work. However, as a result of my Glaucoma I have experienced more dry eyes over the past two years than ever before. Even the best contacts were presenting me problems in seeing because the contacts would actually adhere to the eyeball. That's how dry my eyes were getting. Finally, this year I have found one of the lightest eyewear that is out there. I have been wearing RetroSpecs & Company eye glasses since April and love the light weight. One added bonus to this is these are actual glasses made in the 1940's.

Without vision insurance this would have cost around $650 which included a progressive and Crizal Lense finish. However, with my vision insurance the cost was around $400.

After listening about the history of RetroSpec, I did ask my eye doctor regarding what happens if they did break or needed parts. I was told that the company had a ten year supply of parts so that should not be a concern.

According to my eye care office, there are not that many of the Retrospecs out there. So, when you buy these glasses, they come in a nice case with a registered certificate showing the authenticity of the eye wear including the year it was made and how much gold there is in the glasses.

Now, how cool is to have a pair of glasses that your grandfather might have enjoyed. It's like owning a piece of history. I can even say, "I have glasses like they use to make."
