Before I begin, I want to make this disclaimer. If you are so concerned with appearance that you will sacrifice any and all taste to make your cake the most beautiful and extravagant creation the world has ever witness, this is not for you. The Johnson Sisters' Baked Cakery places a high value on the taste of their cakes. In fact, their philosophy is simple, "it doesn't matter how pretty it is if no one wants to eat it". My wife and I were right with them on this, so we didn't argue much.
This isn't to say that the Johnson sisters don't make beautiful cakes, only that they prefer to place emphasis on the taste, and they definitely follow through there. My wife and I ordered a white cake with various fillings in the middle of the layers including lemon and raspberry. The frosting was a wonderful homemade butter cream frosting. Unlike the fondant used by many cake makers to make their cakes look better, the Johnson sisters only use pure frosting. (Fondant is that very smooth almost shiny wrap used by many wedding cake makers). The combination is a wonderful cake that your guests will fight over. Be sure to order enough to give everyone large pieces because this cake is best if enjoyed in large quantities.
The look of our cake matched the taste. We had specific requests and came prepared with pictures. After discussing the matter with the Johnson sisters in a no-pressure coffee-shop meeting, we were able to make a quick decision as to the best design (they even matched the cake to an existing wedding cake topper we had already purchased). When we saw the cake on our wedding day, we were thrilled with the wonderfully contemporary yet classic, polka-dot design in three simple, circular tiers.
One of the best things about this cake was that it was delivered hastlefree on the day of the wedding. They did not prepare it days ahead of time, but made it fresh and brought it in during the ceremony. None of our family or friends had to hassle with getting the cake.
If you are considering getting married in Emporia, Kansas, I highly recommend these wonderful bakers. They are friendly, and they make a delectable cake that can not be matched anywhere.
