Wedding Centerpiece Ideas: The Calla Lily

Liz Copeland
The calla lily is a classic flower for weddings. The graceful lines and beautiful shape of the calla lily make it a popular choice for wedding bouquets and centerpieces. They also come in many colors, from bridal white to vibrants reds and yellows, all the way to deep purples and black, which means they can coordinate well with any wedding theme.

If you're looking to make your own wedding centerpiece, and the calla lily will be represented at your wedding, making your own wedding centerpiece might be the way to go. Due to the understated nature of the calla lily, it won't overpower your table, and the long stems can help you make a striking statement in your wedding centerpiece. The calla lily is so beautiful on its own that it makes designing a wedding centerpiece easy with little effort.

I've come up with 3 very different ideas for wedding centerpieces fitting the calla lily theme. I hope that one of the styles will suit your taste.

Floral wreath with center candle

Due to the shape of the calla lily, it can look stunning in a wreath-style wedding centerpiece. If you're debating whether such a classic style can be used at your wedding, consider the theme possibilities. Using calla lilies and other flowers or sprays, you can coordinate them in a bed of lush green surrounding a small glass vase that holds a (preferably unscented) candle. This even works for seasonal weddings of all types. You can also accent with ribbons, fruit, or other things that you feel would go well in your wedding centerpiece. Because it's a short centerpiece, it leaves an unobstructed view of your reception area and guests. The wreath centerpiece is a classic because it's so versatile and functional and the introduction of the calla lily can really change everyone's view of this centerpiece style.

Modern elegance

If a classic look isn't your style, many people are choosing to go with tall glass vases. They come in various shapes, are usually easy on the budget, and they really show off the stems of the calla lily in particular. You can add pebbles or glass beads to the bottom of your vases to secure your flowers in place, and add ribbon inside or outside the vase for an extra touch.

With an arrangement like this, you can also add flower petals or other garnish around the base of the vase, especially if it's slender. Willow branches can also give your wedding centerpiece a contemporary look.

A little different

One of the hottest new ideas is to find a wider vase that's tall enough to encase a your arrangement, effectively submerging it inside the clear vase. This creates a stunning effect with the calla lily. Sometimes, with fresh flowers, they bring the water above the tips of the flowers, but it's not a requirement. This look can easily be done with silk flowers as well. Just make sure to put beads, pebbles, or glass pieces in the bottom of your vase high enough to cover the cut part of your silk flower stems. If a tall centerpiece doesn't seem right to you and a short one just won't do, this wedding centerpiece might be just right.

Supplies:

Many of the supplies available for floral arrangement, as well as silk flowers, are available at your local craft store such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby. You can often find coupons to help cut your costs as well. Don't forget to check their home decorations section for low-cost vases and other forms of display for your wedding centerpieces. Both of these stores often have a large selection of not only calla lily silk flowers, but accent flowers, greenery, fruit, and other things you might find you want in your wedding centerpieces or other floral arrangements.

Difficulty:

Organizing flowers is not that difficult. Greenery provides a backdrop that calls attention to the flowers in your wedding centerpiece. Ribbons and pearl pins can add the perfect accents if done right and they, like greenery, can hide flaws and secure your flowers. Don't hesitate to experiment. Silk flowers are more durable than they look and stems can be cut, bent, and rearranged if you feel you've made a mistake.

Floral arranging is a wonderful hobby that you may even continue after the ceremony. Best of luck to you.
