Wedding Crafts: Silver & Black Monogrammed Hurricane Lamps

Landra Lynn Jacobs
Monogrammed hurricane lamps make a great wedding reception table centerpiece. These gorgeous silver and black monogrammed hurricane lamps are very inexpensive and simple to create, but look incredibly chic.

For this project, you will need (per hurricane lamp):

- One clear glass hurricane lamp (available in the floral section of most craft supply shops)
- Mild dish detergent
- Water
- Paper towels
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Silver Foil
- Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black
- Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
- Computer with printer
- Cardstock
- Craft knife
- Self healing mat
- Masking tape
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth

Begin this wedding centerpiece project by covering the space you will be crafting with newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Carefully wash the clear glass hurricane lamp using a mild dish detergent. Rinse the hurricane lamp well. Dry all surface area on the glass using paper towels. Turn the hurricane lamp upside down to set for a couple hours.

Prime the outside of the hurricane lamp with an even coat of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry for three to four hours. Paint the outside of the hurricane lamp with six to seven coats of Krylon Premium Metallic Paint in Silver Foil. Let the glass set overnight to dry.

Use a computer and word processing program to create a monogram in the font and size you desire. Print the monogram shape onto a piece of cardstock. Place the sheet of cardstock flat on a self healing mat. Use a craft knife to carefully cut out the monogram shape. Discard the cutout.

Attach the remaining cardstock piece to the side of the hurricane lamp using masking tape. Make sure the paper absolutely will not move around. Fill in the monogram design using the cardstock as a template with a Krylon Short Cuts Hobby and Craft Paint Pen in Gloss Black. Continue to add coats of black paint to the monogram until the silver no longer shows through. Dry completely.

Remove the cardstock from the side of the hurricane lamp. Spray the entire outside of the lamp with an even layer of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray. Allow the monogrammed hurricane lamp to dry overnight before using as part of your wedding reception table.

TIP: For an alternate look, consider using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black for the main part of the lamp and a Krylon Leafing Pen in Silver for the monogram.
