Wedding Decoration Ideas: How to Decorate at a Garden Wedding

One of the main advantages of having a garden wedding is that you don't actually need to decorate much at all. However, there are a number of small things you can do to make your garden wedding site feel more polished and complete.

Garden Wedding Decoration: Color Scheme

The first thing you need to consider when decorating for your garden wedding is the color scheme. Gardens obviously have a lot of green in them, and the bride will be wearing white, but beyond that, the sky is the limit. Many gardens have floral blooms, so when you are reserving the garden wedding site, ask about what colors of flowers will be in bloom at that time of year, and consider building your color scheme around those.

Many couples choose to keep things simple and stick to a green and white color scheme. There are a number of flowers, such as hydrangeas, that come in a beautiful light green color, and light green accents can also be added to the flower girl, the guest tables, and even the bride.

Garden Wedding Decoration: Flowers

Once you have decided on a color scheme, the next thing to figure out is what flowers you want to bring into your wedding in the form of bouquets, centerpieces, aisle decorations, and altar flowers. One option, as mentioned above, is to make bouquets entirely of green and white, with classic white flowers such as white roses or calla lilies, potentially mixed with some light green flowers such as hydrangea and colored calla lilies. Sheer white ribbon looks great on a light bouquet such as that.

Another option is to incorporate the types of flowers that will be blooming into the flowers you have brought to the wedding site. If you have an early spring wedding where tulips will be blooming, you could bring in small pails of tulips to line the aisle, which can then be moved to tables to act as centerpieces during the reception.

Garden Wedding Decoration: Trellis

If the garden you are getting married in does not already have a trellis, you should consider renting one for the big day. A beautiful white trellis will add a great touch to your garden wedding, and it can be a way to make the informal setting feel a bit more like a formal event. Decorate your trellis with ivy and other greens, along with some tulle wrapped around and through it.

Garden Wedding Decoration: Candles

Lastly, a very classy decoration for any garden wedding is candles. These can range anywhere from traditional candles in paper bags lining a walkway to tiny tea lights everywhere. One favorite way to use candles at a garden party is to float some candles in a bowl of water, along with some lily pads or other greens.

If you are using candles in your garden wedding, make sure that you are careful to not start any fires with them. In addition, it might be worth checking the site beforehand to see how sheltered your candles will be, and considering putting them in jars to keep the wind from blowing them out.
