So, you've decided to make your wedding decorations yourself. That's nice. As if it won't already be a very special day, when you make the decorations yourself, you have even more to be proud of at your wedding. It's not hard to make cute place cards, table runners, floor clings, and other decorative accents for the reception. And, when it comes to the flowers, don't worry about making expensive floral arrangements that will cost a huge fortune. You can make gorgeous table centerpieces which are elegant yet budget-friendly.
A cake stand flower dome is a beautiful wedding accent and really easy to make. The cake stand itself offers a way to lift the flowers off the table and to get the arrangement noticed by the guests. That's not hard to do. Start with a cake stand of your choice. It can be glass number or even a cheap, plastic version. It won't matter because, when the flower dome is finished, the cake stand will look spectacular.
Buy a Styrofoam ball which is as large - or a bit smaller - than the top of the cake stand. Cut a sliver off of the ball so that it will stay still on the stand. You'll find this easiest to do if you first slice an old candle a few times with a serrated knife. Then, when you cut the Styrofoam, it will slice through easily and cleanly, without breaking.
Choose large flowers - real or silk - to finish the flower dome centerpiece. If you're using silk flowers they can be attached to the Styrofoam ball using hot glue. If you're using real flowers, poke holes in the ball, and insert the stems. An implement, like a wooden skewer, can be helpful to make the holes.
Start by going around the bottom of the ball and attaching flowers. Work your way around and around the ball, making rows of flowers which are straight, until you get to the very top of the ball. If needed, use small wires to hold real flowers in place, in the holes. If small areas of the ball can still be seen tuck in a few leaves, here and there, to conceal the ball.
The ball of flowers on the cake stand is extremely beautiful yet really easy to make. Make a huge one for the wedded couple's table, and smaller ones for the other tables, or make all the centerpieces the same size. With various sizes of Styrofoam balls, any number of flower choices, and cake stands available in many styles and colors, there are no limits to the flower dome arrangements you can make.
