The number one wedding gift to give for anyone is cold, hard, cash. While many of us have been trained that cash is not a good gift, this rule does not apply to weddings. In fact, many couples ask only for cash gifts. If you are married, you know how difficult it can be starting a new family and a little extra money goes a long way toward getting into a comfortable position. If you want to give cash to your coworker for their wedding, it should not be less than $100. It doesn't have to be more, but you must judge who that person is to you, their lifestyle, and what you can afford. If you work together as store clerks $100 is fine. If you are high-powered entertainment attorneys, pulling in upper six-figures or even seven, then you should, of course, go higher.
One of the best ways to choose a gift for a coworker is to simply ask them about their gift registry. Over 95% of couples have a wedding registry. Ask them where it is and how they can browse. Find a gift that is basic and not too personal on the registry. Kitchen appliances and small knick-knack items work well. You don't want to spend a lot of money on a coworker but you should be looking in the $75 - $100 range. If there is nothing on the registry in that range, try another gift mentioned here.
If you don't want to give cash and there is either no wedding registry or nothing on the registry that is appropriate, a good idea is to give event tickets. If you have been working with the bride or groom for some time, you will know a little about what they like to do for fun or what music they listen to. Go to Ticketmaster online and browse some up and coming events. Make sure they are at least a month out. You don't want anything that will interfere with a honeymoon or getting settled into the new family life. Two months may be even more appropriate, if possible. Also, make sure the date of the event has no obvious interferences with their life. Weekends are usually the best bet.
You may not have enough information for concert or event tickets. In this case, look for something everyone does-eating. Get them a $100 gift certificate to a nice restaurant. It doesn't have to be Nobu, but it shouldn't be Applebee's either. Make it something special that they will remember.
If none of these ideas works for you, what is left is to find a gift card for a store that you know they love to shop at or a store that is popular and appeals to almost everyone. Bed, Bath, & Beyond is a good choice, as the couple will be able to shop a little for many things that they may be lacking in their new home together.
By using this as a guideline, you can't go wrong with that hard to buy wedding gift for a coworker.
