Wedding Gift Ideas for Former In-Laws

Dee Dee Smith
Recently my former brother-in-law became engaged. Although he was only married to my sister for a short period of time, he has formed a strong bond with both me and my family. As strange as it seems, we've also had the opportunity to get to know his fiance. In fact, because they have been together for over a decade, most of the family have met her at funerals, weddings and other events.

This past week my mom, brother and I received a wedding invitation from my former brother-in-law and his soon to be wife. It was not a surprise to us as we keep in touch with them on a regular basis. Nonetheless, we were all a little unsure as to what would be an appropriate gift for a former in-law. With much thought and consideration I believe I've come up with some great gift ideas; and, I am hopeful that many in my same predicament might benefit from these suggestions.

Wedding Gift Ideas for a Former Son or Daughter-in-Law

Truthfully, I'm sure that oftentimes a mother or father may like (although not love necessarily) the in-law better than they do their own child. And realistically, sometimes the parent may know that the divorce was as a result of the mistakes of their child and not that of the in-law. In this case, the son/daughter-in-law may opt to stay in touch with their in-laws as was the case with my brother-in-law. Now that he is remarrying, what would be an appropriate gift for my mom to give to him and his new wife?

A great concept is for the former mother or father-in-law to purchase gifts that reflect the union of two families. Some ideas might include a family photo blanket/tapestry, digital photo frame or a family tree plaque (if doing this be careful to include all children/grandchildren and to get the correct spelling of their names).

Gifts that encourage family bonding are also a good choice for a former parent in-law. Some ideas to consider include a picnic basket, board game or family/group tickets to a sporting event.

If the couple is in good financial standing, the former in-law might consider a donation to a special charity that he/she knows is special to the heart of the couple.
Wedding Gift Ideas for a Former Sister or Brother-in-Law

As a former sibling, I hope to give a gift that is reflective of our bond as brothers and sisters. This to me should be somewhat of a personal gift, yet it should be something that the bride can also enjoy. In choosing a gift for a former sister or brother-in-law, consider the following choices:

Choose a gift that reflects the couples passion(s). For example, both my brother-in-law and his new bride enjoy camping. Consequently, camping gear/equipment might be a perfect choice. Some options might include a lantern/flashlight, cast iron cookware or sleeping bags.

My brother-in-law and I had some wonderful times together. He was the one that took me to college or picked me up from school most of the time, and truthfully, I probably still owe him some gas money. I'm considering a number of unique gifts that I think will give both him and his wife a little chuckle. Some thoughts include a gas gift card (with a note thanking him for all of the times he picked me up from school), a movie basket (including some of our favorite movies along with a large supply of microwave popcorn), or gift certificates to their favorite salon/spa (as I cut his hair for many years).

A very comfortable way in which to give a gift to a former in-law is to give together as a family group. Join funds together to purchase a large gift. Together the family can give a wonderful "big gift" such as a home expresso maker/cappuccino machine, a weekend stay at a bed and breakfast, or a nice set of luggage. Giving a gift this way can also aid in making the gift giver feel a little more comfortable.
