Wedding Tips: Songs for the Father-Daughter Dance

Picking the Right Song to Make Your Wedding Right

Margaret Kerr
Every little girl dreams of their wedding when they are young. Some go so far as to write down their vision and over the years, tweak it to change their likes and dislikes. But as much as one plans, there are often small details that are overlooked or discounted. One of those things is often the music that is playing for the father/daughter dance.

The father/daughter dance is one of the most sacred and special parts of any wedding reception. The song choice can make or break this dance for both the father and daughter. The song that is chosen should be a song that has special meaning for the father and daughter, but not something silly.

The choice of song should be something traditional, something the bride and her father can slow dance too. It shouldn't be something that the father doesn't know or like, but it also needs to be something that the daughter likes as well. Ideally, the song should represent the relationship between father and daughter.

There are several songs that are most often chosen for the father/daughter dance that truly exemplify what an ideal song choice is, but there are also lesser chosen songs that should be looked at as well.

Butterfly Kisses sung by Bob Carlisle. This song exemplifies the relationship between the father and daughter. It tells the story of a little girl growing up. It tells the story of the father watching her as she grows and how she always takes a moment to let him know that she loves him. The song exemplifies the joy that it has brought to the father, knowing that his little girl loves him so much..

A Dozen Red Roses sung by Tammy Graham. This song isn't as well known, but it is a fantastic song for a father/daughter dance if the bride's father has passed on and someone else is standing in. The song is a story of a father leaving a note for his daughter to read on her wedding day, letting him be a part of it even if only in spirit. It's a great reminder that no matter what, a father is always looking out for his little girl.

A Whole New World sung by Peabo Bryson and Regina Bell. This song is a great choice because it is the last dance between the father and daughter before she starts her new life with her spouse. In a sense, the father is handing his daughter off to her groom, sending her off into a whole new world. It's a great song over all, because a wedding is the beginning of a new world and a new life for the couple.

Those are just a few songs that I consider to be the best choices for a father/daughter dance. Perhaps you can suggest other songs for the brides to be when they are planning their dream wedding.
