Wedding Trends Include "Trashing" Your Wedding Dress to Create Artistic Photography

Trash the Dress: Controversial or Creative?

Susie Lee
As weddings become more individualized and more stock is put in creating memories and capturing them on film (or digitally), it is only natural that different photography styles and trends emerge. Photographers bored with traditional images are spearheading the movement. The website, www.trashthedress.com, which is owned by Eric Mark, showcases images of brides in their wedding dressed in places you normally wouldn't pose a bride.

For those of you who are not familiar with a Trash the Dress session I would suggest visiting Mark's website. Unlike a bridal session this session takes place after the wedding when you don't need to worry about keeping your dress pristine any more. The session is held outdoors and can include locations like the beach, a wooded area, old warehouses and just about anywhere else. The style can be anything from light Gothic and somewhat dark to just plain fun and playful. The images are made to be artistic and stylized. The point is not necessarily to ruin the dress; it is mainly about having fun and getting creative images. It is up to the bride about how far she wants to take the session. She may just want to get images of her in her wedding dress in an unlikely location, or she may want to jump in the ocean while wearing it.

Trashing your wedding dress may seem like a strange idea. However, it is becoming increasingly popular. Mark's website claims that it is a better option than preserving your dress and hiding it in your closet. It also claims that your daughter will not want to wear it in twenty or thirty years. This is probably true since styles and trends change. The website also points out that you won't wear it again either, and that it is a sign to your new husband about how committed you are to him.

There are different opinions about trashing wedding dresses. There are those that see it as something fun and liberating and there are those that see it as wasteful and pointless. In forums and message boards posters are giving alternatives such as donating your dress to those that can't afford one or selling it on eBay. The decision is really up to the bride and it can be one filled with emotion. After all, it is the dress you were married in. If you are not completely comfortable with the idea it is probably not advisable. If you are planning on investing in a Trash the Dress session make sure your photographer and you are on the same page about your ideas and what you expect.

Artistic expression has a history of being controversial and trashing wedding dresses to create imaginative images is no different.

I have seen a few from a different photographer and her images are fantastic! The personality of the bride really comes through.
