The names bring back laughter from my childhood and early adulthood. These were the sidekicks of our sitcom heroes. Armed with out of style clothes, funny hair cuts and crazy ideas, these guys were an indispensable part of each show's dynamic duos. They weren't always the smartest nail in the shed, but they all had tender hearts and true devotion to their friends.
I think my favorite sitcom growing up had to have been Happy Days. Of course, part of that could have been because when I was 13, I was hopelessly in love with Chachi and would have given anything to be Mrs. Scott Baio! I stood up and cheered when the writers brought him out of the "Fonzie's Geeky Cousin" stage and into the forefront of the storylines. I screamed with envy when he FINALLY got Joanie to go out with him.
But looking back that's not the real reason that Happy Days remains near to my heart. The reality is that I am a kindred spirit with all the geeks: And Milwaukee and the Cunnigham house was full of them: Some on the backburner...some right in our livingrooms every week.
Melvin and Eugene Belvin: The hapless brothers that wanted nothing more than to just fit in and have the girls notice them.
Al Delvechhio: The slightly overweight restaurant owner that always had a smile on his face and loved the teens that hung out at Arnold's, but gets his feelings hurt when he overhears the kids making fun behind his back.
Ralph Malph: Often used humor to cover up true feelings...
Potsie Weber: Could bare his soul when he sang, but often had trouble with one on one conversations.
Marion Cunningham: Perfect wife, mother, housekeeper, chauffer....but quite often overlooked.
I could go on, but you get the idea. And the truth is...we all do it. Sometimes, we're totally in tune and we feel as put together as Fonzie. Other times, we appear to be two sided....the Ralph's and the Marion's. We put on a facade for the world to see while hiding away
But I can't really hide because God sees the real me. He knows all of my faults and my insecurities. In light of this...Why is it that I try so hard to fit in to a world that is looking for a reason not to accept me?
When I could simply fall back onto the promise that I am WANTED....by God~!
1 Peter 2:4 As you come to him, the living Stone - rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-
And you too, my friend...are precious and wanted by our Heavenly Father.
