Week 10 AP Rankings Could Shift BCS Rankings

The Week 10 AP Top 25 Poll Has Some Serious Shifts in the Top 10

Ryan Christopher DeVault
The week 10 AP Poll is quite interesting. The week 10 AP Poll shows ranks that could shift the BCS rankings a lot when the new BCS polls comes out. The reason being that in the top 10 of the week 10 AP Poll, only the #1 ranked Florida Gaotrs stayed in the spot within the rankings. Due to some teams that were gauged on their performances this past week, and a loss by former #4 ranked USC, there has been a huge shift within all of the rankings, but specifically within the AP Top 10 there have been a number of shifts that could really affect the BCS rankings outlook for the coming weeks of college football.

The biggest game between any of the teams in the AP Top 25 had to be the match-up between then #4 USC and #10 Oregon. The Pac-10 battle was won by Oregon in a blow-out, causing USC to drop down to #12 in the newest poll, and for Oregon to jump up to #8 in the week 10 AP Top 25. Oregon only made it up to #8 in the week 10 Coaches Poll, so it is a bit surprising that they would receive even more respect over in the AP Poll. Their only loss of the season came to Boise State earlier this year, and that is probably one of the main reasons that they are getting a lot of respect from the week 10 AP Poll.

The team that is really arriving on the scene is Iowa, but even though they won to push their overall record to 9-0, they still fell in the ranks from #7 down to #8. There isn't a lot of reasoning that goes along with that drop, as they actually had two teams pass them in the week 10 AP Poll. Both TCU and Oregon passed by Iowa, which won their game with a great fourth quarter, but had to do it with a lot of injuries that were really affecting their squad. Despite having the best overall record in college football right now, for some reason they have been relegated to a lower AP ranking than they had last week. Talk about a huge slap in the face to a program that has had to overcome a lot this season.

The other thing that could come as a shock, is that Alabama fell out of the #2 spot by having a bye week. Texas jumped up to #2 with 13 first place votes, trailing just Florida and their 38 first place votes in the week 10 AP Rankings. Alabama still has eight first place votes, but that knocked them down a peg this week. The week 10 AP Poll also really likes Cincinnati, which is now the new #4 team, even though they have struggled to receive that same respect over in the week 10 Coaches Poll. The 2009 college football season is going to get even more interesting after these shifts in the ranks, and now its becoming an even more wide open season than in week nine.

Iowa has the best record in all of college football, and is the only team to sit at 9-0 so far. Too many voters are holding the losses of Ohio State against Iowa this year, and it has to be frustrating to be a Hawkeyes fan in what is there best season in quite a while.

Thank you for recognizing Iowa's effortd this year. It has been a heart stopping season to say the least. And as for all the people who give Iowa ANY credit, consider this: yes, Iowa has come from behind in 8 of 9 games to WIN, our QB threw 5 INT, 4 in the 3rd quarter, then had 4 back-to-back-to-back-to-back scoring drives to WIN, and we have the 2nd longest active WINning streak in the country, and the Hawks have one of the best records this season (9-0) and play a more difficult schedule than any team in the top 5 of the BCS.

Apparently, to some this means Iowa is lucky, a pushover, desearving of little but scorn. To me, and thousands of people in Hawkeye Nation, it means overcoming adversity to triumph. When did that become a bad thing?

I wish it weren't true, but the AP affects how the school's vote in the coaches poll unfortunately, which then brings changes to the BCS. Hopefully in the end, the affect isn't enough to make a difference.

    Now THAT I agree with...playoff!

The Big 10 hate needs to stop. We've had a few bad years in bowl games, but so have many conferences. Did you know that there are more active Big 10 players in the NFL than any other conference? If you line up the Big 10 with nearly any conference team for team, we usually win because of the overall conference depth.

You do realize that the AP poll is not used in the BCS ranking don't you?

It's time for a playoff system!

And I'm a Hawk fan. The AP is crapping on Iowa, and I'm fine with it because the AP is meaningless now. Ohio State won this way in 2002 and they were in the top 3 all year...Iowa got more respect in 2002 and they had one loss. So we don't blow anyone out...who cares? The last I checked it's who has more points win the game.

I hope that Iowa gets Florida in the title game, that would be a dream "Gator" so we can expose you like we do all SEC teams in bowl games.

The AP influences the coaches, who in turn influence the BCS. In a perfect world, all coaches would vote in the polls based on watching all the games. But the sad reality, is that some of the coaches don't care, and pass their ballots on to other staff members.
