Week 15: A Busy Week in the National Football League

The Miami Dolphins prevented tying the futility mark for an NFL season by winning an overtime game against the Baltimore Ravens, 22-16 in Week 15. The overtime period, of course, was instituted in 1974, to limit the occurrence of the dreaded tie game.

The New England Patriots, at the other end of the spectrum, became only the second team in NFL History to go 14-0, the first being the 1972 Miami Dolphins. In 1972, the season was a 14-games, so we'll never know what the outcome would have been had there been the two additional games that now make up the NFL season. Of course, in 1972, there was no over time in regular season games and were that the case today, we'd be discussing the 0-12-2 Dolphins of 2007; they lost in overtime to the Washington Redskins in week 1. I'm sure there were champagne corks popping all over Tampa/St. Pete Sunday Night, because as I'm sure you know, every time the last winless team wins or ties, members of the '76 Buccaneers pop champagne.

The Dolphins ownership also denied reports the team is up for sale. Presumably with 1-win under their collective belt, they must believe the franchise value has increased and are seeking better offers.

Brett Favre added another milestone to his career and the NFL record books: with a 7-yard pass in the fourth quarter, he advanced past Dan Marino in career passing yards: he ended the 33-14 Packers' victory over the St. Louis Rams with 61,367 passing yards, six more than Marino's 61,367. This season, he has become the all time wins leader, all time touchdown leader, all time interception leader and, now, the all time passing leader. He has passed greats such as John Elway, Dan Marino and George Blanda

Not to be outdone, the Indianapolis Colts became the first team in NFL history to have 5-consecutive 12-win seasons; while an impressive feat, one reason it has never happened before was the length of season - the NFL went to a 16-game season in 1978, a 14-game season from 1961-1977, and had a schedule of between 10 and 12-games until 1960. The fact of the matter is, though, that despite the expansion of the season 29 years ago, no other team has been able to accomplish this. The Colts defeated the Raiders 21-14.

The Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills played to an 8-0 score in favor of the Browns in near-blizzard conditions. The game featured 40-mph howling winds, white out conditions, a field completely covered in snow, and a rare safety on a botched punt.

Brian Westbrook of the Philadelphia Eagles may have cost fantasy owners points on a touchdown, but he also did what it took to win the game. The Eagles were ahead 10-6 with about 2 minutes left, when Dallas quarterback Tony Romo was intercepted at the Cowboys' 25-yard line. Westbrook ripped off a 24-yard rush, then stopped at the 1 yard line and allowed himself to be downed by contact. This is remarkable on several levels, not the least of which was to allow his team to maintain possession of the ball and to kill the clock for the last two minutes of the game.

Undefeated record in tact, victory-less mark avoided, passing mark attained, consecutive winning seasons record set, snow and heads-up football. Week 15: a busy week in the National Football League

I have to agree with Lester, this was a great week of football, but fantasy wise, especially during the playoffs for some of us, it was a beating we didn't want to take.

Decent week of football. Horrible week for fantasy football and anyone who took the over.

Although it didn't seem to be too exciting of a weekend, the snow made things fun to watch...that Jacksonville-Pittsburgh game was a doozy.
