Week 5: All Contestants Finally Weigh in Together
Brett and Cara's Teams Face Elimination for First Time
This week's episode became with the new trainers giving their students a final workout before heading back to the Ranch. The contestants had to do a combination of boxing training, obstacle courses, medicine ball work and jogging. As much as I've become accustomed to Bob and Jillian's workouts, I like the methods of the new trainers. Their workouts seem like they reduce stress.
Q, the weakest player of the unknowns, was confronted by Cara and Rulon for leaving the workout. Q made a lot of excuses for not working as hard as he should have. He hadn't gotten the point of working as a team to accomplish a fitness goal. Q used a lot of words like "me" and "I," not necessarily good for weight-loss success.
Meanwhile, back at the Ranch, Bob put contestants through this famous outdoor obstacle course. Jillian worked one on one with Hannah, who suffered from back pain from a sports injury she suffered. Jillian made her do a back bend to face her fear of hurting herself. Hannah finally saw that she could work harder than she expected.
A weigh in occurred in the first 30 minutes of the show. Jen and Jay returned from their week with the new trainers. Don and Irene teamed up. Both gained 6 lbs. on purpose. For the first time in "Biggest Loser" history, someone went home at the weigh in. Don went home like he wanted to. It's a good thing because he was not a motivator. He's detrimental to anyone teamed with him. Personally, I wouldn't purposely gain weight for anyone just because they want to go home.
The new trainers and the other contestants returned to the Ranch. The contestants who worked with Bob and Jillian were challenged to lose more than 48 lbs. If they lost more than 48 lbs., all of them would get immunity. The contestants who worked with Brett and Cara would have to send a player home this week. Brett and Cara worked their contestants in front of the people who remained on the Ranch with Bob and Jillian.
It was a new experience for all the contestants. Bob and Jillian's people were curious about Brett and Cara's training methods, and the others had access to equipment they didn't have at Fitness Ridge. Rulon even broke a treadmill.
The challenge was designed for Brett and Cara's people, their first official challenge at the Biggest Loser Ranch. The winner of the challenge would get immunity for a fifth week. Each team had to put weight on a scale. When the scale reached 500 lbs., that team would be eliminated. The last team standing received immunity. Everyone gunned for the Red Team first - Q and Larailmy. The Gray Team - Rulon and Justin - got immunity.
The last chance workout was a killer for Bob and Jillian's teams because they needed to lose more than 48 lbs. to get immunity. Arthur needed to step it up a bit because he has more weight to lose. Arthur, however, made a valid point that most exercise equipment is not meant for a person weighing more than 400 lbs.
At the second weigh in, Bob and Jillian's teams lost a total of 63 lbs., saving all of the Ranch players. All of Cara and Brett's teams had high percentages of weight loss, even Q and Larailmy. Despite their 3.59 percentage of weight loss, they ended up at the bottom. Larailmy sacrificed herself to let her husband stay on the Ranch. At home, she weighed 227 lbs., losing a total of 74 lbs. She and her sisters work out together. Don, who went home at the first weigh in, weighed 222 lbs. at home, losing a total of 87 lbs.
One of the lessons learned from this week's show is the importance of motivation. Don somehow sabotaged his partner, causing her to gain weight with him. Don's inability to succeed on the Ranch also showed that not every weight-loss method works for everyone, even with the best trainers and exercise equipment. Everyone has to find the plan that works for him.
