Week 5 NFL Picks and Predictions - 2010 Season Red Hot!

Rodney Southern
It is hard to believe that week 5 NFL picks and predictions are already here. We are steamrolling through the NFL season it seems, and some teams are truly starting to show their colors. Regardless of how powerful some NFL teams are, you can still be sure that any team can jump up and bite them for a loss. For example, the Jacksonville Jaguars ruined what would have been an awesome week of picks for me in beating the Colts. Still, it was a solid week overall. If tonight's game goes as picked, then my week 4 NFL predictions will finish at 10-4. Not bad at all.

As for my competition, Mr. Randy Inman leads the way at the moment in our best of AC picks, but I think he might be hearing footsteps after this week. Here I come... Be afraid. Be very afraid....

Now, off to the races. Here are my week 5 NFL picks and predictions:

SUN, OCT 10

Week 5 NFL Picks - Kansas City at Indianapolis
1:00 PM @ Lucas Oil Stadium

Finally, we get to see if the Kansas City Chiefs are for real. It seems to me that they most certainly are, but I am not sure if they are AFC champion-like worthy. I do think they are going to beat some teams in some situations where they should not. This, however, is not one of them. Peyton Manning is notoriously nasty in games where they are coming off a loss, particularly at home in Lucas Oil Stadium. The Chiefs will get a wake up call this week, and the Colts will get their footing back.

Winner - Indianapolis Colts

Week 5 NFL Picks - Jacksonville at Buffalo
1:00 PM @ Ralph Wilson Stadium

While Jacksonville did go and beat the Colts last week, they are still not fooling me. For years, I have jumped onto the Jaguars bandwagon only to be burned by a stupid loss like this one. I know that Jacksonville will not do that again. Right? Right???

Winner - Jacksonville Jaguars

Week 5 NFL Picks - Tampa Bay at Cincinnati
1:00 PM @ Paul Brown Stadium

This is yet another of those games where it is tough to pick a solid winner. The Bengals should win on the surface. They are home, they have a superior offense, and they play reasonably good defense most of the time. With that said, I take the common sense approach on this one.

Winner - Cincinnati Bengals

Week 5 NFL Picks - Atlanta at Cleveland
1:00 PM @ Cleveland Browns Stadium

Can the Atlanta Falcons really be feeling overly good about themselves? When you look at this past week and the game against the Saints, the Falcons are two leg swings from being in a serious bind. The Browns did, in fact, win as I predicted last week. I know when to get off that horse, however. No way the Browns hold it together for two weeks in a row.

Winner - Atlanta Falcons

Week 5 NFL Picks - St. Louis at Detroit
1:00 PM @ Ford Field

Ladies and gentlemen, these are not your typical Rams. The last few seasons have been rough for the Rams, but they have officially moved from being a doormat to being a potential contender since they reside in the NFC West. The Lions are still knocking on the door. Though this is the type of game that could be dangerous for the Rams, I still think they will pick up the win.

Winner - St. Louis Rams

Week 5 NFL Picks - Denver at Baltimore
1:00 PM @ M&T Bank Stadium

Denver has been managing to get by, but I doubt that will be enough to handle a tough Baltimore Raven squad. Joe Flacco is showing signs that he might be coming into his own. This game is the perfect example of the games he must win to put them in the playoffs. Can they win the games that they should like the ones that where they are underdogs? I think so...at least this week.

Winner - Baltimore Ravens

Week 5 NFL Picks - Chicago at Carolina
1:00 PM @ Bank of America Stadium

The Bears could not have looked worse on Sunday night against the Jets. The Panthers actually showed signs of a pulse against the Saints. Cutler is likely out for the week. This is one game that you can see coming. Here comes the upset special of the week...

Winner - Carolina Panthers

Week 5 NFL Picks - Green Bay at Washington
1:00 PM @ FedEx Field

This game is one that might be much tougher for Green Bay than one might think. The Redskins are going to give up a ton of passing yards, but Donovan finds a way to keep them lurking nearby. I would not be shocked if Washington won, but I see Green Bay pulling it out.

Winner - Green Bay Packers

Week 5 NFL Picks - NY Giants at Houston
1:00 PM @ Reliant Stadium

These two teams are certainly among the most puzzling this season. The Giants did all they could to let Chicago sneak in a win, and Houston did the same in week five. Both walked away with wins. I think that Houston will win this one simply due to superior talent and being at home.

Winner - Houston Texans

Week 5 NFL Picks - New Orleans at Arizona
4:05 PM @ U of Phoenix Stadium

Arizona is really bad. They have looked horrible every time I have seen them. New Orleans is struggling in many ways, but they have plenty to handle the Cardinals.

Winner - New Orleans Saints

Week 5 NFL Picks - Tennessee at Dallas
4:15 PM @ Cowboys Stadium

Dallas is coming off a win in week 3 and a bye in week 4 so they should be in a good mood. They also should be well prepared and at home.

Winner - Dallas Cowboys

Week 5 NFL Picks - San Diego at Oakland
4:15 PM @ Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum

I will give the Raiders some props here. They have been tough as nails every game this season. I expect good things in the future. The Chargers are a team that has problems on the road, but they are still close to home in this one. This will be a blowout.

Winner - San Diego Chargers

Week 5 NFL Picks - Philadelphia at San Francisco
8:20 PM @ Candlestick Park

I bet the schedule makers are pretty upset that this game was on the schedule in prime time. San Francisco was expected to be a huge hit. Not so. Philly was supposed to be sporting a red hot Michael Vick. Not so. What is there to watch here? Maybe it will respark a sad Niner season.

Winner - San Francisco 49ers

MON, OCT 11

Week 5 NFL Picks - Minnesota at NY Jets
8:30 PM @ New Meadowlands Stadium

Now this one could be a heck of a lot of fun. I have no clue who to pick here, simply because I think Mark Sanchez is overrated and his bubble is about to burst. Will it burst in this prime time game? I say that the Minnesota Vikings will win this one by the skin of their teeth.

Final Score - Minnesota Vikings 28 New York Jets 26

Week 5 NFL Bye: Miami, New England, Pittsburgh, Seattle

Week 4 Record: 10-4 (Assuming Patriots win tonight. If not, I will edit this)
Season Record: 36-26

I'm still smarting over the Steelers. Baltimore is a great team, but geez was this upset a miserable turn of events. We had the chance of winning $242.00 on this last pool. : O
