Week One College Football Rankings Must Reward Utah

Ryan Christopher DeVault
Week one college football rankings need to recognize Utah next week. The week one college football rankings will certainly showcase many teams that crushed weaker opponents in their season openers, but the AP Top 25 and Coaches polls need to reward Utah for beginning their 2010 season against a ranked opponent. Utah finished the 2009 college football season with a 10-3 overall record and a bowl game victory, but for some reason came into the 2010 season unranked in the college football preseason polls. That error needs to be rectified based on what Utah's defense was able to accomplish on Thursday night, because this team looks for real.

Utah beat No. 15 Pittsburgh 27-24 on Thursday, starting off their season quite nicely. Next week they play against UNLV on Saturday, September 11, and that will open up their conference schedule within the Mountain West. Not many of the teams in the Mountain West Conference are going to get a lot of respect outside of the MWC, but Texas Christian (TCU) and Brigham Young (BYU) are both going to be trying for a possible BCS bowl invite. TCU was ranked No. 6 in the preseason college football polls, and BYU is constantly a team that is considered one of the better programs in college football. Now Utah has to prove they belong among the elite, and they took a great first step by beating Pittsburgh in the opener.
