Week One NFL Preview - New England Patriots at New York Jets

Tom Brady Brings New York Headaches in the Form of Moss, Thomas

Rodney Southern
The New England Patriots head to Giants stadium in New York to face the long time rival Jets in a week one AFC East showdown, and the Jets have to feel like they are facing a modern day Goliath. The Patriots strengthened an already mighty line up of players by adding some superstar talent to their roster. They added Randy Moss, Adalius Thomas, and Wes Welker as well as a cast of others in their quest to regain the mantle of Super Bowl favorites. The Jets did add some talent of their own, however, in signing running back Thomas Jones. Jones is the piece the Jets felt that they needed to step up to playoff contender.

New England quarterback Tom Brady has to feel like it is Christmas morning every day of the week. With the addition of Moss and Welker, he will have targets zipping all over the field, as well as a fantastic young running back in Laurence Maroney. Maroney has made excellent strides in the off season to show he can be the workhorse in this high powered offense. With the addition of Thomas, the Patriots defense should once again be fantastic, and further strengthen this offense with great field position.

The Jets are feeling pretty good themselves this season with quarterback Chad Pennington back to full strength, and the addition of Jones in the backfield. They also strengthened the defense through the draft with the additions of Darrelle Revis and David Harris. Both of these young play makers should step in right away to help out. Jones has shown to be a reliable number one back in recent years, and the Jets needed that piece to add to a young running game. Second year man Leon Washington will get some work as well, and continue to grow into the Jets running back of the future.

This game at face value looks like the Patriots in a laugher, but the Jets are better than everyone thinks. The Jets will give the Patriots some problems in the secondary, and just might sneak in under the radar. The likelihood is that the Patriots will affirm their status as the class of the AFC, and pull out a closer than expected win.

Final Score New England Patriots 28 New York Jets 21
