Weekend Getaway to Oklahoma is Fun for the Whole Family

Frontier City Theme Park and the Sam Noble Museum Make for a Great Family Vacation

I recently took my four children to Oklahoma for two nights. The main reason for our trip was to check out the University of Oklahoma however that didn't sound like tons of fun for the younger kids, so I did a bit of research to find out what family attractions were available in the Oklahoma City and Norman area of Oklahoma. The two choices that looked like the best match for our family were the Frontier City theme park in Oklahoma City and the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History in Norman on the University of Oklahoma campus.

On our first day we went to the Frontier City theme park. The park has an old western feel to it and we thought they did a nice job of carrying the theme throughout the park. All four of my kids loved the rides that this park has to offer. There were water rides, several roller coasters, and an area just for young children. Our family really enjoyed the "Renegade Rapids" river raft ride - so much so, that we went on it three times in a row! The crowds were very light the day we attended so it was easy to go on rides multiple times. To find out more about Frontier City visit their website at: www.frontiercity.com/home.

On our second day we drove to the University of Oklahoma. After touring the campus we drove to the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. We were all very impressed with the museum. The hands-on attractions and amazing displays kept our family busy for hours. The highlight of the museum for our family was the Hall of Ancient Life. One of the exhibits in this area holds the Guinness World Record for the largest dinosaur skull ever found. The skull belonged to a pentaceratops and measures ten-and-a-half feet high! The website for the museum is: www.snomnh.ou.edu.

What started out as just a college visit turned into a wonderful family vacation. We had such a good time we are planning to return next summer just for fun.

Before you plan your trip to Oklahoma I would recommend that you check the official Oklahoma Tourism website at: www.travelok.com. The website has lots of handy information, including a section devoted to coupons and discounts. We found coupons for both Frontier City and the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History on this website that saved our family over fifty dollars.

Oklahoma sounds interesting, the dinosaur head at l0 and 1/2 feet is awesome - want to see it for myself as well as the rest of the family - good idea on the money-saving coupons.
