Weekend Getaway in Titusville, Florida

Jane Vee
My choice for a weekend getaway for a family is Titusville, Florida. In the heart of the Space Coast Titusville offers a unique getaway. Less than an hour in any decoration are more attractions than a person can do in a week. Staying in Titusville and driving to the attractions will allow you the weekend escape you need. There will be a lot less traffic in Titusville than near the attractions or in the bigger cities.

When looking for a hotel in Titusville, I suggest route 50, which is also known as Cheney Highway or US 1 as the areas to stay at. The hotels on Cheney Highway range in price starting around $65 a night in September, which is probably the best time of year to come due to weather and tourism. The Ramada Inn, Quality Inn, or even the Best Western on Cheney Highway are all great choices. The prices are Quality Inn 64.99 a night plus tax, Best Western $93.99 a night plus tax and Ramada Inn $69 for a room or $84 for a suite plus tax.

Durango's Steakhouse is located in Best Western. The parking lot seems to get a little crazy at times, but the hotel is nice and has a pool and sauna. Our room even came with a small refrigerator. I was told that not all the rooms are the same though. If you are looking for something specific I suggest you ask. The traffic in the hotel parking lot may bother you, but once you get to the hotel your stress diminishes.

The best time to go to Titusville, Florida is September or October when the weather is cooling down in other parts of the nation and you do not have to worry about lots of snow while traveling. This area of Florida is usually warm and the temperature is 70 degrees or higher which will warm those chilled bones up.

If you are trying to get away from it all, the beaches are nice and you can even go fishing. The river is on the east side of the intersection of Cheney Highway and US 1. If you are staying at a hotel on Cheney Highway, your drive to the river will be less than ten minutes. The beaches are half an hour to 45 minutes away. The beaches are the busiest in the summer months and during spring break. I suggest Cocoa Beach. Daytona Beach is where all the "spring breakers" go and usually there are groups holding gatherings on the beach year round. Cocoa Beach is more family oriented and there are even free parking lots along the beach.

From Titusville, if you are looking for attractions or things to do, you do not have very far to go. Daytona is less than 45 minutes north if you are a racing fan in search of Daytona USA. Bike week is in October if you are a fan of motorcycles. Disney, MGM, Universal Studios, the other theme parks, and water parks are all about 45 minutes west of Titusville. To the south of Titusville, Brevard Zoo is about 30 minutes away. Then, the reason the area is called the Space Coast is to the east. Kennedy Space Center is less than 25 minutes to the east.

Titusville offers parks and recreation as well as grocery stores near the hotels. If you are trying to get away from it all and just want to rest in a hotel, this is a great area to stay. A Wal-mart super center is located on Cheney Highway and some of the restaurants even deliver to the hotels.

Orlando airport is 45 minutes away from Titusville and there are car rentals at the airport. Titusville is a weekend destination that depending on the length of stay and the plane ticket cost, the cost can easily be under $500 for a visit. Just remember going to the beach is free, but if you are going to the attractions the cost can be $50 and up just for a day per person. The zoo is under $12 a person and there are lots of free things to do in Titusville including enjoying your hotel's pool.

It's strange that as close as I am to Titusville, I don't know it at all. You may have inspired me to change that.
